I'm a big fan of Tolkien, Martin, Herbert, and Rowling. Patiently waiting for the next installment of Game of Thrones. I've picked up the first installment of Wheel of Time and so far it's not that bad, but it's not nearly as good as the others mentioned above.

Any other recommendations or does the Wheel of Time get better as you go along?

Epic series specifically?

Stormlight Archives by Sanderson would be my first rec. Only 3 of 10 released though.

Raven's Shadow - Anthony Ryan
Night Angel - Brent Weeks
Riyria - Michael Sullivan
Codex Alera - Jim Butcher
The Dark Tower - Stephen King
Mistborn - Brandon Sanderson

You really can't go wrong with anything from Sanderson's Cosmere books.

Wheel of time gets better, but it is very long and it is a real either love it or hate it type series. It has a lot of problems, but the scope and world building are second to none - that can be a positive or a negative depending on who you ask though. Book 1 is not a great indicator and WOT comes into its own a lot more in Book 2 but Book 3 for me really starts the best part of the series IMO.

Books 2/3 to about 7/8 in Wheel of Time is one of my favorite stretches in all fantasy. It ends pretty well (another author had to finish it) but the third quadrant suffers from the author being sick in the end and the scope getting too big.

Malazan Book of the Fallen is my favorite epic fantasy series but a lot of people find it a challenging read as the author puts a lot on the readers plate to put the pieces together and figure out what is going on.

Other than that, are a bunch of series out there, depends on what yuo are looking for in terms of style.

If you search the board for similar threads you will find pages of recommendations (not being a dick just saying you can find a lot of recs that way without having to wait for people to respond).

Also since you liked Dune i would recommend Foundation, Foundation and Empire and Second Foundation - its a sci fi trilogy (there are more in the series but those are the main three you should read) by Isaac A Asimov. One of the "must reads" in sci/fantasy IMO and they are all about 250-300 pages so easy to knock out quickly but definitely in the top tier of the gene

I just finished the Book of Murgen. Didn't love it, but liked Croaker and Lady. Are the next books his POV?

The Faithful and the Fallen by John Gwynn.

4 books.

Excellent series. I started a thread a few months ago but seems like one or 2 others have ever heard of it. I stumbled upon it by accident.

I remember several people having this same opinion. That's why I started the series. I'll give it to book 3 and see where it goes.

If you want a stand-alone book, I highly recommend “Villains by Necessity” by Eve Forward.

“With the banishment of Evil from the realms, the final victory of Good is assured-unless a few stalwart antiheroes can save the world from a serious and potentially fatal imbalance. First novelist Forward explores the complications that arise from a surfeit of "goodness" in the world. The result is a skewed version of the epic fantasy that features an assassin, a thief, an evil sorceress, a dark knight, and an implacable druid as the villains-turned-heroes who must restore the delicate balance of opposing forces before their world disappears in a blinding flash of Goodness and Light. -- Library Journal”

First Law series- Joe Abercrombie
Night Angel series - Brent Weeks
Riyria series - Michael Sullivan
The Faithful and the Fallen- John Gwynne
The Lies of Locke Lamora- Scott Lynch
Malazan series by Steven Erikson (I would start with the second book of this series and then read the first one if you like it, though if you like all of Herbert's Dune series I don't see the first book being problematic for you either)

The second to last book, Water Sleeps, is written in the POV of Sleepy. The last book goes back to Croaker's POV. Both are tremendous improvements over the Murgen books (I thought Bleak Seasons was a huge pile of meh, and She is the Darkness was only okay), with Soldier's Live being a pretty great conclusion to the series (I think it's on par with the early books in the series).

Cook has two new Black Company books coming out, one takes place between the first two I believe, and the other is a conclusion to the series, allegedly.

Cook was talking about writing this book back in like 2005-2006, so I'll kinda believe it when I see it on this one. Though it looks like Port of Shadows (the prequel one you mentioned) is finally coming out in the fall after 18 years since Soldier's Live came out, so you never know. Given he is in his early 70s though I have my doubts.

This! And the fact that it is completed makes it even better. I also stumbled on it right before the 3rd book was released.

"The Black Company" is also a great series. It takes a while to get used to the writing style but once you do it becomes a fun read.

Probably some of my favorite characters written! There are 4 books in this series that can be read as stand alone books.

Have you read the first three books? They are in Chronicles of the Black Company and are a standalone trilogy. I believe they are the first in the timeline and are excellent. The compendium consists of The Black Company, Shadows Linger, and the White Rose. Croaker is the narrator.

Yea, I started there. And really liked it. And the 4th book, with Lady's POV, was different in tone but still good.

But Bleak Seasons was not enjoyable. It was a struggle to finish. Wondering if I should keep going.
