Kings of the Wyld - Nicholas Earnes

I'm only halfway through it, but I love it so far. I've laughed out loud several times at the humor. It's gotten great reviews as well.

The second book is coming out August 28th.

The Lies of Locke Lamora- Scott Lynch

Probably some of my favorite characters written! There are 4 books in this series that can be read as stand alone books.

Another of my favorite series.

One clarification to the above post.

Each book is basiCally a stand alone story, but I don’t think you can start with book 2 and definitely not book 3 and really understand everything.

While each book has its own story, there are references to the previous books and certain plot point are revisited. I think not reading them in order would lessen the enjoyment, or at least make some things confusing.

And book 3 ended with a bit of a cliffhanger and it looks more and more like Scott Lynch is channeling his inner JRR Martin and will never publish the next damn book!!!

It took him forever to get book 3 out too. Though I give Lynch a pass compared to Rothfuss and Martin because there are actual legit reasons for him taking so long. He had a major divorce and serious depression issues that pretty much sent him off the rails over the course of the early part of the decade. Hopefully he can get the 4th out soon.

Oh. Really had no idea about his personal issues.

Hopefully he gets his life back on track and can finish the series.

Yeah he has crippling anxiety, too. And probably the more he fails to get the book out, the more his anxiety ramps up. Just a guess.

Asimov’s Foundation series is a must read if you like the genre. i’ve “read” it twice, once in print once and once as an audible audiobook and must say that for this series I prefer the audiobook.

how long are the audio books?

I reach each of the main three in about a day, which is nice to be able to get through them fast.

Elric of Melnibone series - Michael Moorcock

Chronicles of Amber - Roger Zelazney

Two of my all-time favorite series.

I would recommend Foundation series as well.

R.A. Salvatore

While mainly known for all things Drizzt (Forgotten Realms) he has a series set in a world of his own creation (Corona) with a very interesting take on magic, it's place in that world and the various lores that have come about because of it.

The series starts with the Demon Wars Saga (7 books) then migrates into a few others.

If you find yourself with retirement-level amounts of time, you can always start on the Drizzt books (somewhere over 3 dozen and counting, including ancillary books).

This is a good point, you probably could read them as standalone but you wouldn't really understand everything, so forget what I said and start with book 1. You won't be disappointed.

Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind is terrific.

The rest of the Sword of Truth series is hit or miss. A couple greats, some duds.

WoT book 1 differs from overwriting.

Dude spends waaaaay too much time trying to be descriptive about shite that doesn't matter at all.

It really makes the book drag.

He describes inane minutiae like George RR Martin describes penises an nipples.

Half a page describing a shop booth that nobody stops at, or sees again. . .

It gets better.

I enjoyed that, its a true world building series, to be honest i haven't picked them up in many years though so maybe it is different in that regard as the series moves on.

The hair pulling and the like i could do without but I really enjoy the description and detail in his series ( I also have an easy time reading through that type of writing quickly without having to focus on every detail).

Book 1 is just sort of a typical introductory story which is why i didn't like it quite as much. Strange heros enter the village and are chased by the evil hoard, etc.. I felt like the story came into its own much more as it moved on and then got bogged down after about 2/3 of the way through due to the expanding story line and, i would imagine, his illness.

Despite its fault still one of my favorites with so many great moments - won't give specifics so as not to spoil for anyone.

Another recommendation that I haven't seen posted yet is The Riyria Revelations by Michael J. Sullivan. Very fun and fast moving story, and the two main characters are written really, really well.

I loved those characters!

Also with TGR as the narrator on audiobook.

Great series. The prequel series seems quite good as well, though I've only read the first so far.
