Eye of the World (WoT Book 1) - Spoilers

I just finished the first book in the series (I'm actually about 100 pages into book 2 already). I loved Eye of the World. It captivated me from 100 pages on. I just have one question that I'm hoping can be answered without spoilers or just tell me you can't answer because of spoilers.
The Green Man seemed like a weird and unnecessary addition to the story. He shows up for a bit, is killed by one of the Forsaken, then turns into a tree. So, my question is, was the Green Man some sort of metaphor that I missed completely or will we hear more about him in the next 10,000 pages that will make his inclusion in the story make more sense?

Without getting overly spoilery, The Green Man existed, but is not particularly important for the future of the series. His...species is mentioned again but he/they are not important in reality. I could see him being completely omitted from the TV series.
Personally...I think because RJ's publisher pushed him so early on to be more like LOTR that he included him to be more like an Ent I guess.
There are a lot of things in EOTW and the first 3 books in general that are clearly abandoned for the rest of the series.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for.
Another aspect of the books that I hope gets fleshed out is a pretty innocent part. Throughout the first book Perrin and Rand think to themselves that they wish they were more like the other when it came to girls. I thought it was pretty funny and hope it comes up again.

You don't have to worry about that not coming up again, I promise.

Yeah I just started Book 5 and had the same thought.

I don't think you missed anything exactly. His inclusion will make more sense as you get through a few more books in terms of where he came from and how he got there. Just a another remnant of a bygone age.

I just finished the first book as well, enjoyed it. Going to read Project Hail Mary for a break and then start book 2 after.
