Did anyone else find Ready Player One to be overrated?

We get it....you cream your pants over the fricking 80s...
I was kind of let down by this book.

It was sold to me as a fun, slightly sci-fi story with a ton of 80's references.
That's exactly what it was. I never really expected a masterpiece of literature.

Not overrated, but as a kid of the 80s the literal constant barrage of references did get tiresome at a few points and ruined the flow of the story.
It usually recovered, but I feel like the writer opened up that Retro 80s website/encyclopedia and just wrote stuff to use it all.
I can't find that website anymore, but it's been around for awhile.
I still loved the book, because I love the 80s, but it was a bit much at points.

I really enjoyed for what it was.
I don’t think not was meant to be earth changing literature but it was a good fun story.
I actually liked Armada better though.

I thought it was okay. It's one of the most hated books on reddit, though. Not that that says much

This book was incredibly hyped and now has a movie deal and something like a 96% rating on Goodreads, etc.

No.
I'm not even a big 80's fan, but I really liked it.

I enjoyed it but it is overhyped.

I didn't get most of the references since I was born in 87, but I still flew through the book. It was at least entertaining. I never had a second thought about it once I finished. So, I would say it was just OK.

Overrated isn’t the word I would use. Maybe redundancy is a better term. Had I read the book before the all things 80’s nostalgia orgasm after having watched Stranger Things on Netflix, for example, the sudden surge in popularity of D&D, then I might have enjoyed the book more than I did.

so many people i knew read it and raved about it. i found the writing to be mediocre. 80s references didnt change that for me. it felt more like those references were the point, rather than the actual story.

I read it before I really heard anything about it. So I rather liked it.
That said, the movie trailer looks like shite

I enjoyed it. Only thing that bothered me is that there is no way the guy who built OASIS could have done that if he watched all the retarded shite the author describes in the book.
I think the movie has a lot more potential. The freedom of being able to go to any fictional world using the OASIS has amazing possibility for the big screen.

I really enjoyed it the first time I listened to it, with all the fun references and mash-ups of genre's. Once those fun references lose their shine though, the underlying story is very mediocre. My main problem was, on second reading, I hated the protagonist. He just came off as kinda a creep to me.

Dude absolutely. I selected it as one of my books to read in 2017 because people were nutting about it but man that book sucked. It sounded like the author was just a middle-aged World of Warcraft player sitting in his fap cave just writing “he jumps out of his robot suit from *insert 80s movie* and then OH YEAH also he had a Delorean too...,” rambling for an entire novel about random 80s nerd shite

I enjoyed it but I agree it wasn't as awesome as advertised. I never got the feeling that it would ever not turn out best for our hero so that really affected the story for me- he had to overcome so many obstacles and I felt like there was no way he wouldn't.
And I'm probably showing my "white privilege" but all of the SJW stuff wasn't needed. The world is what it is due to climate change. One player is a black lesbian (whose mom kicked her out of the house because of her being gay) but chooses a white guy icon because it's so much easier. It was like he was checking boxes on what cultural remarks a current Hollywood script would require. Maybe he was and that's why it's being made into a movie...
