It won't be very good either. Books 4 and 5 certainly don't hold up to the standard he established with the first 3.

Does anyone see themselves sort of drifting away from ASOIAF if it truly is a 2016 or after release? Hard to stay engaged for years waiting.

I already am less engaged in the show now that I've read everything, it just isn't as entertaining now that I know the plot.

Meh, as someone who's been reading the series since 1998, I don't think it matters much to me at this point. Martin moved into my Robert Jordan "writers who lost their way and started writing slow as crap" group a long time ago. I read way too many authors and series to really worry about how long one series is taking.

As much as I think it's pathetic that it's taking him this long to write, I'd rather he do a good job than do something similar to what Stephen King did with the last three books of the Dark Tower and ruin the series.

Of course the longer he takes the worse Martin's books have been, so I guess we'll see. I have high hopes for WOW's quality regardless.

How'd you get into the series back in 1998? I had no clue it even existed until the show came out.

Yeah, I don't really understand are you reading books that there aren't movies and TV shows produced already?

How do you find these books, if there's no TV show about it?

Oh, and who is Robert Jordan are there any TV shows based on his books?

I was walking around Barnes and Nobles I believe (or some other bookstore), and saw a blurb on the cover of Game of Thrones from Robert Jordan (ironically enough since I just mentioned him) saying the book was brilliant, and fantasy book of the year, blah blah. Read the back cover and it sounded interesting, there you go.

If you were into fantasy before GoT came out then you probably knew of ASOIAF.

FWIW the only fantasy series I was exposed to before ASOIAF/GoT was LOTR and it wasn't my cup of tea. Wayyyy too out there with the fantasy aspects and too much hobbit gayness. I tried reading LOTR when I was 13/14 when the last movie was out but I stopped about 50 pages into FotR .

GoT is much more 'my speed'...a little fantasy mixed into a Middle Ages-esque setting. Plus I love how GRRM made me change my mind about some characters as each book progressed...and I love the political aspect of the series that seems to be missing in a lot of fantasy.

One of the best things about GRRM's books (outside of the books being great themselves) is the impact it's had on the fantasy genre. Fantasy since the early 2000s has really changed thanks to his impact and others like him. It's much more enjoyable now. Pre-Martin there were only 2-3 fantasy authors I really read, now I read a great number of them.

A Clash of Kings was published in 1998; it hit the US in 1999. GOT was already out and had won some major awards by then.

You just had to go there Lady.

I was in college myself. It's funny, I was discussing the series with some of my high school students a few weeks back and it hit me that the series was as old as they were. Kinda puts how long it is taking him to write them into perspective.

Considering how young I was when the first 3 books debuted...yeah I feel bad for all you Maesters who started reading before 2011 .

anyone else reading some of George's earlier stuff to pass the time until TWOW? I picked up Fevre Dream yesterday and it seems pretty good so far. It's an antebellum vampire novel similar to Anne Rice's stuff. Anyone else read this? no spoilers please

Yeah, Fevre Dream is pretty good stuff. I'd recommend that and Tuf Voyaging as his best novels other than ASOIAF. His short story collections are all excellent as well. The Armageddon Rag and The Dying of the Light I found to be just okay.

I picked the series up in 99-00. Can't remember which.

I'm in the same boat. I like the show a lot but the books don't do much for me anymore. Too long a wait for such shitty books in 4 and 5.
