Do we know who sent Thoros and Melisandre to convert Stannis and Aerys II and why?

Great questions. I'm not sure, but I can't wait for some responses.

I don't think it's ever been revealed.

Playing that with closed captioning turned on is hilarious.

It looks like a priest was also sent to Dany but no one else. That also has me puzzled.

GRRM was asked this very question

Q: Why did Melisandre seek out Stannis? Did she see him in her flames and decided to seek him out on her own, or is she on a mission on behalf of the red priests? It doesn't seem at any point as if the latter is the case, when you compare to Moqorro who has been sent out by the priesthood.

GRRM: You're right. Melisandre has gone to Stannis entirely on her own, and has her own agenda

Ia anyone else hoping for a rollicking modern version of "The Dornishman's Wife" this season. Although I guess it would be more appropriate in either season 5 or 6.

Then what about Thoros. Great find by the way.

Thoros was sent to proselytize in Westeros somewhere around the end of Aerys's reign/ beginning of Robert's, i believe because the Red Priests figured that a pyro like Aerys would be ripe for their religion. Thoros talks about it at one point in the books, but I can't recall which one. He doesn't really find true belief though until he is in the Brothers without Banners. Recall he had to use tricks for his burning sword before.

Mel was the strongest one in her order by far, and left after seeing her visions. She was pretty jealous when she saw what Thoros could do cause he's a drunk womanizing fighter.

He's awesome and she scares me

Yeah, I was just rewatching season 3 with the scene where she takes Gendry. He talks about regaining his belief until he saves Beric but I was wondering why he was sent and who sent him.

The show including that little visit with Mel, Thoros, and Beric pretty much confirmed that she will be resurrecting Jon in the upcoming story, at least that's how I see it.

Agreed. I'm rereading ADWD and in her POV it says she's at her most powerful by being at the Wall.

I hope Thoros gets some more pub in the next 2 books too. It seems he was at every big battle with his flaming sword wrecking shite usually for the "good guys." If there is such a thing

He was one of the first one over the wall in Greyjoy's rebellion. He was also mentioned beating the Hound a few times in tourney's when he uses Sandor's fear of fire.

Something that struck me on the HBO rewatch: After everything Jon did to get in with the Wildlings so he could warn the Nightwatch - killing Halfhand, risking his own life, etc., he almost throws it all away because he didn't want to kill that old man when they went south of the wall.

Kind of clashes with a lot of the gritty, realistic and dark tone of GoT and a lot of other modern historical fiction.
