And if people who are not novelist and writers that have no idea what it takes to write a series of this scale would shut frick up and quick complaining about a sequel to a book that was only released 3 years ago, maybe he could get something done. Seriously, have you ever written anything that was a 2000 page manuscript? I'll bet cool fricking mill that you haven't. You're complaining about someone who is providing you entertainment and enjoyment in a series that is 5000 pages long already and you probably didn't spend $100 to get it. This is what people sound like when they complain about this shite: "Thanks for a wonderful narrative that goes outside the box and brings enjoyment to myself and many others. I think it's great how smart of a series this is and you done a magnificent job with it... now hurry the frick up or I'll murder someone over a book.

It makes me hope that he comes out tomorrow and says, "You know what? frick it. I'm done. A Dance with Dragons is the last in the series and I'll leave it where you can use YOUR imagination and not mine to decide how it ends." Then he would release one more chapter sample where Melisandre saves Jon Snow, just so she could pull out a .357 and put a bullet in his head. THE END. Then everyone would be pissed off and I'd sit back and laugh because the people who complain about books not being published deserve every single fricking bit of it. I mean George has a life too. It's like people expect him to sit chained to a chair writing just so they can have enjoyment, but frick his enjoyment, he CREATED this world for people to explore, he doesn't deserve a damn thing.

I think the frustration is valid since it took him 7 years between books 4 and 5 when he was able to spit out the first 3 in 3 year intervals and has claimed to know the ending since he started.

Plus you see him doing all these non-writing related activities and spending time writing novellas that most people don't give a shite about. Its not like hes been holed up in one of his two houses that are across the street from each other in ABQ trying to finish the series. At least it doesn't seem like it. It appears that GRRM is more interested in playing celebrity since the show became so popular than actually finishing the series.

I also think releasing the sample chapters is just a tease and further contributes to the issue of waiting between books than helps to alleviate it, but thats just my opinion. I know some people love reading the sample chapters as they come out

It really is just one giant book, I don't care if he releases the chapters one at a time.

Maybe with the season premiere coming out in a few weeks people will lighten up around here.

He's been releasing sample chapters since before ASOS, it's not like he's doing anything different now than he was at the start. Not sure why actually giving fans what they want would be a bad thing.

He's also on record as saying he's contractually obligated to go to all the conventions his publishers tell him to, so it's not like he has a choice on that note.

Dude has a right to enjoy the money he gets from his writing and have hobbies.

My only issue is that his last two books were the worst books in the series and took forever. If he was taking his time and producing awesome books that would be one thing, but his quality is suffering the longer he takes.

Hopefully the next book is more of the quality of the north storyline in ADWD rather than the Mereen one.

At any rate, plenty of other excellent authors to read in the meantime, most of which don't take a bazillion years to get a book out.

What didn't you enjoy about AFFC and aDwD?

I thought they were excellent books myself. Thoroughly enjoyed them and may have read through them faster than any of the other books.

But then again I don't get why people hate Dany, Brienne etc storylines. Lots of info in them. And Dany has to learn how to rule a city before she attempts to take over the world.

Disclaimer: I am in no way a Dany lover. In fact I loathe her. Yet her storyline is very interesting and obviously is a huge part of the overall plot in the series. She's done a lot more than most readers seem to remember

Some Brienne chapters in AFFC were borderline worthless and the Dany chapters in ADWD were a clusterfrick with all the jihad names. Other than that, yes, great books.

Yea I agree that if he were increasing the quality of books with increased waits between them then I wouldn't mind, but thats not the case.

Book 4 didn't have Tyrion, Jon or Bran chapters so it automatically takes a hit just for that.

And I thought just about every POV in book 5 related to Meereen was pointless so it was frustrating that Dany, Barristan and the Martell doofus all had POV chapters almost exclusively focused on it.

I could understand someone throwing Victarion's and Tyrion's POVs into the heap of frustrating Meereen POVs

Both are decent books, they just aren't even close to the same level of the first three. ASOS is probably my favorite book I've read in the last 20 years, and AGOT and ACOK would be in my top 15 if not top 10. ADWD and AFFC wouldn't even be in my top 30. They are more 7.5/10 or 8/10 books compared to the 9.5/10 or 10/10 of the first three. Add in the fact I waited 5 years for AFFC and 6 years for ADWD and they are even more disappointing.

As Hugo mentioned, much of Brienne's story in AFFC served no purpose whatsoever, it's just a waste of time. He could have cut her story by 75% and served the same purpose. While I enjoyed the Dornish parts, it could have been condensed as well.

As for ADWD, anything having to do with Mereen that wasn't narrated by Selmy is completely terrible writing and horribly boring. It's a giant clusterfrick that is worthless. You can tell how badly he struggled with his "Mereenese Knot" by the poor quality of the writing in those parts, and it;s easy to see how lost he was with trying to get Vic, Tyrion, and Dany all to the right spots to get her back to Westeros. Her entire storyline in ADWD is basically treading water until the storylines can meet up, it is completely pointless. Outside of Mereen the story is excellent, but unfortunately Mereen is like 40% of the story. Mereen even made Tyrion chapters suck, and that's damn hard to do.

That is one thing I actually got mad about when reading ADWD...Every time a new character was introduced as Dolthar Xi Xenamabop I would want to throw my book across the room.

The best part of ADWD is that we finally have all the players in the same place at the same time to make some shite happen. I'm convinced he was boring us to tears purposefully.

Anyone else also get totally aggravated at how not concise the last two books were. The first three books were so focused and consistent. They had the same POV characters throughout the book and each character's story had a beginning, middle, and end before they moved on to their next story.

He didn't just throw in two Arya chapters, a random Melisandre POV, Oh and let's throw in one random Jaime POV. There is no organization at all. You read through the entire aDwD book and there is this rising build-up throughout the whole book of this impending battle between Stannis and the Boltons and it NEVER HAPPENS. Tyrion never makes it to Dany. Mereen is a total and complete mess and the book just ends.

It's like GRRM writes the books now with the mindset of just writing chapter to chapter instead of writing a complete and finished concise novel. aDwD also ended with way too many cliffhangers and unanswered questions. It's no wonder people are constantly pestering him for tWoW.

Its a really frustrating read. Honestly, the only POV characters he should have added are Cersei, Brienne, Arianne, Asha, and Barristan. The rest have been worthless. I still can't fathom what the hell he was thinking by giving Arys Oakheart a chapter.

At least WoW will hit the ground running. The only cliff hanger that really pisses me off is Jaime and Stoneheart. That should have made Dance without question.

Either that or just left it till WOW. Putting that in was just an intentional dick move.

Agree with you on Oakheart. Given that he knew he would be using Arianne as a POV it would have made far more sense just to include a couple chapters of her affair with him from her POV.
