Yeah, he prolly survived. Even though he was stabbed multiple times. Why not? And he is probably a Targaryen. Even though he burnt his hand on a lamp when saving the Lord Commander (pretty bad too) And he probably is an end character. (even though he may be dead).

All that makes perfect sense, but this is RR Martin. He dont care. Assume nothing.

I don't recall it being stated explicitly, but they laid some pretty heavy hints....like just short of stating it explicitly.

The Elder Brother of the monastery, while speaking to Brienne, seems to know an awful lot about the mind and soul of Sandor Clegane. Perhaps too much for having only briefly spoken to him as he died.
The gravedigger at the monastery is a large man, bigger than Brienne.
The gravedigger, along with all the other novices, wears a scarf which covers his face. This would have made it impossible for Brienne to have seen the distinctive burns attributed to Sandor.
The gravedigger has a healing injury similar to the one that Sandor received at the Inn at the Crossroads.
Brienne notices the gravedigger bend down to pet a dog, which many readers believe is a hint left by GRRM.
The Elder Brother is very vague while speaking of the death of The Hound. It is possible that he is speaking metaphorically and that he believes the violent and angry version of Sandor has died and now the new Sandor lives on. This is supported by the fact that the Elder Brother mentions that he 'died' on the Trident when he used to be a warrior. In reality his 'death' only consisted of a major life change (as he believes Sandor has taken).
The presence of Sandor's black horse Stranger (now named Driftwood) on the Quiet Isle is another clue. It has been previously stated that only Sandor could lead or ride Stranger as the horse is exceptionally hard to handle.
Some readers consider the fact that Davos Seaworth saw Sandor board a ship named the Prayer during the Battle of the Blackwater significant.

I know Brienne's chapters are boring for the most part, but go reread Brienne VI. "The Hound" died in his arms and begged for the gift of mercy, but Elder Brother swore a vow not to kill anymore...lots of metaphorical talk by Elder Brother about him. Stranger is also there and the Gravedigger has an injured leg (like Sandor) and bent down to pet a dog. Stranger is also being kept there and the septons renamed him "Driftwood". There's also a Crackpot theory I read once that Elder Brother departs for the Vale soon after Brienne and co. leave to go find Sansa and that's he's posing as one of the knights at the Eyrie. Heavily Crackpot, like I said. But the Elder Brother was a knight before he became a Brother. Also another theory is that Sandor (upon hearing what Brienne said) leaves for the Vale too. But I think both of these theories are too pie in the sky for Martin to do.

The idea is that the Hound is there to heal and recover from his physical, mental, and spiritual wounds from his life. And think about what Beric said in ASoS/Season 3, "Go in peace, Sandor Clegane. The Lord of Light isn't done with you yet." I think he's coming back to the main plot in some way in TWoW. Not sure how, but whether it's fighting/killing Robert Strong, finding Sansa, finding Arya, whatever, I think he's coming back.

Feast for Crows seems so long ago. I need to do some rereading I reckon.

I really like that he is a true badass killing machine, but with a human side. Unlike his psychotic brother.

His interactions with Arya are some of my favorites.

Maisie Williams and Rory McCann do excellent with the Arya Sandor dialogue.
