The Red Badge of Courage. Made into a movie starring Audie Murphy

Dave Madden was incredibly fond of Rome Hanks (Pennell). I can recommend it on that basis alone.
Madden wrote Sharpshooter, which is also on point for your topic.

I'll probably get canceled for even acknowledging this exits but:
Guns of the South
Time travelers go back in time to give the CSA AK-47s.

Killer Angels by Michael Shaara
quote:
The Killer Angels is a 1974 historical novel by Michael Shaara that was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1975. The book depicts the three days of the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War, and the days leading up to it: June 29, 1863, as the troops of both the Union and the Confederacy move into battle around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and July 1, July 2, and July 3, when the battle was fought. The story is character-driven and told from the perspective of various historical figures from both the Confederacy and the Union. A film adaptation of the novel, titled Gettysburg, was released in 1993.

Starbuck series by Bernard Cromwell; I just wish he had finished the war.

I second The Killer Angels recommendation. It’s fantastic.

It's crazy that I didn't think of it immediately, because I don't think of it as "fiction".
Obviously, should be the top of any list.

Agreed. I figure he was going to have Nate be involved/blamed for killing Stonewall Jackson.
Then he’d have Nate either flip to the north or more likely say frick it and head West.

Didn't realize he had a Civil War era series. Loved the Saxon Stories so I might have to check that out.
Also, has anyone ever read Cold Mountain? I enjoyed the movie, but never checked out the book.

John Jakes, North and South.

Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier, News of the World by Paulette Jiles (this one technically is post-war though)

Here are a few fictional Civil War books that I would highly recommend:
Michael Shaara/Jeff Shaara Civil War Trilogy
Gods and Generals by Jeff Shaara
The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara
The Last Full Measure by Jeff Shaara
Covers the Civil War in the Eastern Theater.
Jeff Shaara's Civil War Quadrilogy
A Blaze of Glory
A Chain of Thunder
The Smoke at Dawn
The Fateful Lightning
Covers the Civil War in the Western Theater.
Ralph Peters's Battle Hymn Cycle
Darkness at Chancellorsville
Cain at Gettysburg
Hell or Richmond
Valley of the Shadow of Death
The Damned at Petersburg
Judgment at Appomattox
Catching up with the war in the spring of 1863, it covers the conflict in the Eastern Theater - though in a much more brutal and gritty fashion compared to the Shaara father and son duo.

The North and South trilogy is very good. It was made into a miniseries in the 80s.
