Pickleball is the fastest growing sport around, but apparently it's coming at a cost ...
quote:

According to Bloomberg, the health insurance company UnitedHealth Group has seen a rapid uptick in the number of hip replacement and knee surgery claims. Per the report, researchers at Swiss investment bank UBS have attributed a large portion of that uptick to the growth of pickleball and the injuries that correlate to the sport.

That increase will reportedly cost American upwards of $377 million this year coming year. One analyst told Bloomberg that the annual cost of healthcare capacity utilization and costs could range between $250 million and $500 million.

The analysis stems from the focus on a 2021 study of picklers titled “Non-fatal senior pickleball and tennis-related injuries treated in United States emergency departments, 2010-2019.” Research showed that nearly one-third of picklers suffered sprains, another 28-percent suffered fractures, and another 10-percent suffered contusions.
