When the wishbone was popular it was not uncommon to quick-kick on 3rd and long. When the O is in a hole it can be a tremendous equalizer. Ain't really new.

The ball stuck and went backwards, they are hoping for it to roll forward. With nobody back to catch it you can turn a 40 yard kick into a 70 yard kick if the ball rolls.
