Clemson Coach Danny Pearman Apologizes For Using Racial Slur In 2017 Practice
FOR EDITORIAL USE ONLY
Former Clemson TE D.J. Greenlee opened up about an incident involving Tigers assistant Danny Pearman on Tuesday...
quote:

“It was just a heated argument during practice, basically,” D.J. Greenlee told The State of the incident. “Me and the coach got into it and I was speaking with one of my teammates.”

Greenlee tried to provide some clarity on the incident. “He heard me use the n-word basically, and basically tried to correct me by saying the n-word back.”
Later in the day on Tuesday, Pearman issued this statement/apology...
quote:

“Three years ago on the practice field, I made a grave mistake involving D.J. Greenlee. I repeated a racial slur I overheard when trying to stop the word from being used on the practice field. What I overheard, I had no right to repeat.

While I did not direct the term at any player, I know there is no excuse for me using the language in any circumstance. I never should have repeated the phrase. It was wrong when I said it, and it is wrong today.

I apologized to D.J. at the conclusion of practice, who then appropriately raised his concern to Coach Swinney. Coach and I met to discuss the incident, and he reiterated that my language was unacceptable. I later apologized again as well as expressed my sincere regret to our position group the following day.

I love the young men who choose to come to our university, and I would never do anything to intentionally hurt them. I sincerely apologize to D.J., his family, our team and our staff.”

There is no excuse for either to use the word or in music, or in any facet of life. And that's real talk!!!

Well Coach, let's go back in your history. When you were 10 years old, did you have any derogatory thoughts about Native Americans while you were playing cowboys and indians?

DH Greenlee is a bad person. He knew this coach did not say that in any malicious way but he is throwing him under the bus because it feels good right now.

Exactly! 2 1/2 years later to bring it up?

So any perceived racial slurs or grievances (no matter how recent or in the past) will now surface. It's just an incredible time in America.

So he said the word to stop another player from using it but he is in trouble b/c he is white - bet he has not one racist bone in his body. Stupid. Back when I played, All the blacks used the N word all the time. It gets stuck in your heard. Several times I wanted to say Whats up ma N_gg_z but caught myself. I hate the damn word - either everyone use it (as in Bro, Buddy, Homey, etc.)or no one use it (IMO)

Frick almighty. Why do we pretend this is normal? He’s a racist for using the N word while trying to get kids to quit saying the N word? Quit playing along with this BS

He was not a racist in that instance. He may be a hothead, but in that moment it was a heated reaction. I grew up in and around racism and it's covert and not out right all the time. This was an isolated public incident.
