According To MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred Having Robot Umps Is Not Far Off
© Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred was fielding questions on Wednesday and that's when he updated us all that having robot umpires in baseball is not as far off as we think. I had no idea they were even working on it. Per The Athletic...
quote:

“I think we are much closer than we were a year ago to having the technological capability to actually call the strike zone,” Manfred starts. “The accuracy is way up – way better than what it was a year ago. The technology continues to move … and it actually moved a little faster than I might have thought.”

“There remains a fundamental question the owners are going to have to address. When you take away the home-plate umpire’s control over the strike zone, you take away a principal piece of his authority in terms of managing the whole game. … We haven’t had a lot of conversations with (the umpires) on this topic, but I do think there is a serious management-of-the-game issue you’d have to think about with respect to that change.”
I can see robots being more accurate than umps. That's until they take over the human race. Thoughts?

I can’t wait until the first manager/robot balls and strikes argument.

Back in the day Umps used to adhere more to the defined strike zone. At least it seemed that way. It’s always bad when an ump or referee makes the game about them. Baseball umps are like Russian or Chinese gymnastics judges.

Never gonna work. Batters would tee off on pitchers when they realize they have to throw an actual strike.

Like tennis, use it as an instant challenge system.

Great. Just what we need, something new for the Russians to hack. Next thing you know, Trump will single handedly win the World Series.

The robot can quickly send a call to the ump via earpiece and he can still call the strike/ball. This would be meeting in the middle and allow umps to still 'run the game'.

"Strike strike strike strike strike strike strike." Call down to dugout, ah yea can someone please tap the ump somewhere to get the connection straightened out. "Ball 4!" Ah jesus Christ! Tap him again please. "Play ball!"
