In his 12-year NFL career, Mathieu played in 180 games, starting 171. His career stats include 834 tackles (681 solo), 45 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, and 36 interceptions.

His football career achievements include:

Super Bowl champion (LIV) with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020
3× First-team All-Pro (2015, 2019, 2020)
Second-team All-Pro (2019)
3× Pro Bowl (2015, 2020, 2021)
NFL 2010s All-Decade Team
PFWA All-Rookie Team (2013)
Chuck Bednarik Award (2011)
SEC Defensive Player of the Year (2011)
Consensus All-American (2011)
First-team All-SEC (2011)

Here was Mathieu's farewell message on social media:
quote:

As I hang up my cleats, I'm filled with gratitude as I close this chapter of my life and officially retire from the game that's shaped me in every way.

From my first snap in college to my final play in the NFL, this journey has been nothing short of a blessing. Football gave me purpose, discipline, and memories that will stay with me forever. But more than anything, it gave me a community.

To every coach who believed in me, every teammate who battled beside me, and every fan who showed up, cheered, and rode with me through the highs and lows, thank you. You gave me strength when I needed it most, and your love carried me farther than I ever imagined.

I hope I made you proud out there. This isn't goodbye - it's just the next chapter.

Much love, always.
Tyrann

What a player and what a story. He still has the best LSU highlight film.

TM7 and PP7 both have highlights films I’ll never get tired of watching.
It was so cool to watch TM7 step into Patrick’s shoes and fill them better than any of us could have imagined.
And then to see the way he bounced back after his drama at LSU and not only became a NFL all star, but a leader everywhere he went.

Just a true class act and role model.

He was one of those 'natural' players, had the gift to change a game at a moments notice. Generational player!

The best college defender I ever saw play live. The only defender in LSU history who was literally worth points on the board. You just can't teach what that kid had. Even if he couldn't see it, he could find the ball either by smell or some sixth sense. He wasn't lightning fast at the top end, but made up for it by being extremely quick of foot and wit and played bigger than his smallish stature. At a certain point, words fail me. Congrats to HB7.

His steal of the punted ball and TD against Oregon was one of his best plays.

One of my all time favorites. I've been going to LSU games since mid 60s and I've seen a few great ones. He could change the game in 1 second.
