Multiple sources are reporting that Notre Dame is promoting defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman to head coach.

New LSU coach Brian Kelly had reportedly targeted Freeman to be his defensive coordinator in Baton Rouge but it looks like he will be staying in South Bend, along with Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees who was also on Kelly's wish list.

Former LSU coach Ed Orgeron tried to hire Freeman to replace Bo Pelini last offseason but was beat out by Kelly and Notre Dame.

Will established coordinators want to work for Kelly? They sure didn’t want to work for Eddie…

Do you remember when Saban took the LSU job how many of his MSU assistants got on the plane to Baton Rouge?

Really? Pelini wasn't an established DC? Matt Canada wasn’t an established OC? People wanted younger so he got younger here and one did a good job as well. He also kept Aranda here for a good period of time, long enough to win a championship! I’m not sure why people feel like they must shite on the guy? He’s gone get over it!

Pelini was out of work, and took LSU for a ride to make money to retire. Canada was a reason no other coordinators wanted to work for him. I’m not bashing Kelly because his assistants didn’t want to come with him either, just noting that he will now have to hire good coordinators. Something Ed wasn’t able to do… and the reason he is gone. If Kelly can bring in good coordinators, will just mean that we actually made a good hire.

Good for him, but most assistants who were promoted after the HC was fired/resigned have not fared well

Notre Dame rushed to name a Head Coach. I hope Freeman all the best; however, he has never been a Head Coach. I will be interested to see how it turns out.

That is a tough place to be his 1st head coaching job. ND needed a coach and they could not wait until Fickel was available after the CFP. It makes sense for the short term. We will see how it works out long term.

Here is the thing, while I would have liked to have him, he would have left after a year or maybe 2 for a HC job and we would be right back trying to hire another DC. Maybe not the worst thing to happen. Kelly has lots of connections and I’m sure he will find someone we will like.

If I am not mistaken, ND told him if he chose ND over LSU last year, they would make him HC in waiting... obviously not expecting this. They kind of had to make him HC or risk losing MF and the trust of everyone else.
