Former LSU defensive coordinator and current Youngstown State head coach Bo Pelini could be a strong candidate to replace Dave Aranda as LSU's defensive coordinator, according to Football Scoop.

Pelini served as LSU's defensive coordinator under Les Miles from 2005-07 and was in charge of the defense when the Tigers won the 2008 BCS National Championship over Ohio State.

The 52-year old left LSU after the 2008 title game to become the head coach at Nebraska, going 67–27 and winning at least 9 games every year before he was fired in 2014.

Pelini has been the head coach at Youngstown State since 2015.

He was a little crazy, but his defenses finished #3,#4 and #17 in scoring D when he was here and we won the NC in 2007 when he was here. Pretty strong.

Not many people were excited about CEO being hired.

He is the perfect coordinator...not so much head coach. I’m excited

Who else would be more qualified? He would be a good fit

He brings a different kind of intensity to the defensive side. He was super when he was here before. I trust O's ability to determine this fit. Geaux Tigers!!

I understand he had a few bumps in the road since he left LSU, but he actually did a good job at Nebraska as HC (look up his record and compare that to Nebraska's record since he left there), and he was an AWESOME DC at LSU when he was here before. I don't get all of the doubters that he would be a very good DC here again. I'd like it if he comes back.

Bo left in 2007 with the 3rd rated D in the country. In 2008 it fell down into the low 30's. He's super intense, and a perfectionist, something this Defense has lacked at times.

2007 is a long time ago, and the game has changed...

As I posted in another thread, Bo Pelini actually makes a lot of sense. I'm sure Coach O and Bo have bonded over their previous coaching failures and what happened. It could be a great fit for building some long term stability for our coaching staff. And here's a nugget from one of Bo's press conferences this past December, he wants to win a National Championship! Listen at the 15:44 mark of this video. LINK

I’m with you, people can learn and change.. I also believe this would be a hire that would stick for a while. He wouldn’t just use us as a platform job to the next level.

O and Bo would at least scare the shite out of people when they get pisaed.

Hell yes. I miss his defenses. Hard hitting.

Not sure how his defenses would transition into the spread era. Wasn’t there some controversy at Nebraska?

Bo is a competitor and did a hell of a job getting lsu ready to win the 2007 title vs Ohio State even when he was headed out to a HC job.

Anyone saying otherwise, simply do not remember how good he was when he was here.

His behavior is a huge red flag. He can’t control himself and had an F filled rant at a Husker press conference attacking fans that ultimately cost him his job.

Coach o has f filled rants after games. I his defense Nebraska was dead when he got there.

im a little confused why he would go back to being a coordinator when your are currently still a successful HC, albeit for a very obscure college. i just see it as a sideways move at best so maybe he just wants an out to find a better HC job and a college with name recognition?
user avatar
keakar51 months
meant to say he just wants to use LSU as a graceful way out of a dead end job at nobody heard of it before college, to find a way to get offers at a better HC job at a college with name recognition?

I don't believe he will ever again get HC job at a major university. At Nebraska he was Woody Hayes just waiting to happen. (at his own players)

Hot Carl is laughing, but statistically speaking, Pelini was far more successful than Aranda has been.
