Shoop was the defensive coordinator at Vanderbilt for three years before leaving with James Franklin to take the same position on the Penn State coaching staff.

During his time at Vanderbilt, the Commodores were never outside of the top-25 in total defense.

Shoop and Penn State were second in the country in total defense in his first year with the Nittany Lions.
