Houston Hires Major Applewhite, LSU Remains In Play To Land Lane Kiffin

Randy Sartin-USA TODAY Sports
The Houston Cougars formally announced the hiring of Major Applewhite as head coach on Friday morning, leaving the door open for LSU to possibly land Lane Kiffin as offensive coordinator.
Applewhite, who served as Houston offensive coordinator this past season won the job over Kiffin, former LSU head coach Les Miles, and Houston defensive coordinator Todd Orlando.
Kiffin has been linked to the LSU offensive coordinator job on Ed Orgeron's staff many times over the past two weeks. Orgeron worked under Kiffin at Tennessee in 2009 and at USC from 2010 to 2013 and both coaches are very close friends. Kiffin's contract with Alabama ends after this season.
When asked about Kiffin during his introductory press conference, Orgeron said he is "going to get the best coordinator in football."
Many expect Kiffin to leave Alabama after this season one way or another. He is reportedly a candidate for the head coaching job at USF now that Willie Taggart has left for Orgeron.
USF is meeting with former Texas coach Charlie Strong on Friday to discuss the job opening.
Some also believe Kiffin could possibly end up back in the NFL as an offensive coordinator.
