LSU debuted at No. 10 in the first College Football Playoff rankings that came out on Tuesday night.

If the 12-team expanded playoff were here this season, the Tigers would be a 10-seed playing 7-seed Alabama in the first round, according to Sports Illustrated's Ross Dellenger.

The winner would go on to play No. 2 Ohio State at the Rose Bowl in the second round.

Dellenger also explained that at the end of the season, there would likely be fewer inner-conference first-round matchups.

Tulane would likely be a +10000 against Georgia.

At least 6 of those teams would get shelled by the top few. See why we don't need 12 teams?

Thank you, thank you, thank you for that! At least someone here has some semblance of reason. Within the top four teams, as the current system allows, the number one team in the country can surely be found.

I used to think the same thing. But then I realized that if they went with a 6-team playoff, then there would be too much BS politics and bias that would affect the 2 teams who get byes. For instance, if Bama or Notre Dame is in the mix, any committee is going to do whatever they can to slot them in the Top 2. Having four teams who get byes ensures that the teams who have remarkable seasons are rewarded for it. Take the 2004 season for example, when USC, Oklahoma, and Auburn all went undefeated. In this format, they all would get byes, which is true post-season justice. The odds of their being more than 4 undefeated at the end of the season is nil, so you can pretty much take it to the bank that if you go undefeated and win your conference, you get a very valuable first-round bye.

Personally, I like 8 teams, but as long as the regular season is shortened, I don't mind this format. It guarantees that undefeated, conference champs are rewarded with a first-round bye. My only beef is the idea of using the bowls for multiple playoff rounds. I may be alone in this opinion, but I think it would sound really stupid and silly to hear "Tonight, X and Y square off in the Orange Bowl to see who will go to the Fiesta Bowl." The bowls should be sort of a once-a-season thing. I'd have the big bowls rotate being the semi-final games, similar to how it works now. Have the first round take place at the higher-seeded team's home stadium. It preserves the sanctity of the bowls while also assuring high first-round attendance.

Hahaha so dumb. How are fans suppose to afford to travel to all those games? Wearing kids down for 5 more weeks after the regular season. Adding so many teams that don’t belong. And then it’ll expand to what, 16 teams? This is beyond dumb and out of control. 4 teams is plenty enough.

I hear ya but think about the NCAA basketball tourney, there is always at least one Cinderella in there. That would be pretty exciting for, say, a Tulane.

You do know they've been this VERY successfully at the sub level for many years don't you? No, you don't.

1. It's only 4 more weeks
2. The conference champs get a bye
3. Whoever didn't go to the conference championship gets a bye until the playoffs
4. The last 2 teams standing get a bye before the big game.
5. These kids are now getting legit pay for play, so they're damn near semi-pro.
6. I always thought 8 was the sweet spot.

Yea I'd be pulling for Tulane if Bama got knocked out. This needs to happen just for that extra excitement and to get programs a taste of the big dance that don't normally get it.
