Ed Orgeron Updates Coordinator Search During Radio Appearance On Tuesday

LSU coach Ed Orgeron joined 104.5 ESPN's "Off The Bench" Tuesday morning and talked about his search to find a new offensive and defensive coordinator.

Orgeron said that his top two candidates for the offensive coordinator position are interviewing today and his top candidate for defensive coordinator will interview on Thursday.

Many have reported that those offensive candidates are Carolina Panthers quarterback coach Jake Peetz and Panthers offensive assistant DJ Mangas, both of who spent the last season working under former LSU passing game coordinator Joe Brady.

The connection to Brady is important as Orgeron said that they spoke with him to get his advice on finding someone that can run his offense from the 2019 season. Mangas was on LSU's staff during the 2019 Championship run, working under Brady and OC Steve Ensminger. He was the offensive coordinator at William & Mary before coming to Baton Rouge in 2019.

Peetz, 37-years old, started working with quarterbacks in 2012 with the Jacksonville Jaguars and has worked with the Washington Redskins (2014) and the Oakland Raiders (2015-2017). He was an offensive analyst with Alabama in 2013 and 2018 before joining the Panthers staff as a running back coach in 2019.

The interview on Thursday for the defensive coordinator position is Cincinnati defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman, according to multiple reports.

The 34-year old Huber Heights, Ohio native played linebacker at Ohio State from 2004-2008 and returned to Columbus to begin his coaching career as a graduate assistant in 2010.

He was hired to be the linebacker coach at Kent State from 2011-2012 and moved on to take the same position at Purdue from 2013-2015. He was promoted as co-defensive coordinator with the Boilermakers for the 2016 season. Freeman took the defensive coordinator position on Luke Fickell's staff at Cincinnati in 2017.

If I'm one of those coaches coming in to interview, I love hearing where I stand... it has to make the coach feel confident going into the whole thing. And if O goes in another direction, the candidate knows he screwed up the interview.

based on what he's had to work with, he's been pretty darn good for a 1st time OC moving into the NFL... hell, he may have had more talent on the field at LSU

Yes. Fields went to Ohio St and in one offseason he learned Day/Yurich's offense. LSU as a unit learned Brady's offense in an offseason. We aren't going from pro style to spread, we've already made the toughest transition years back.

@potatochip, he's talking Mangas and Peatz. I can understand keeping the offense the same for continuity, but there are plenty spread OCs we can get in the college game that he doesn't have to experiment again.
