LSU coach Ed Orgeron was on 104.5 ESPN's "Off the Bench" Tuesday morning and talked about freshman tight end Arik Gilbert, who is mulling a transfer out of the program.

Gilbert missed practice on Monday and many believe he is "homesick."

Orgeron said that Gilbert talked with him on Monday to tell him that he was thinking about opting out of the season. Orgeron added that if he were to opt-out, they would take him back in a heartbeat.
quote:

"Arik came and talked to me yesterday and is thinking about opting out of the season," Orgeron said. "He said his body is hurting and he has to get better. His mother is in town speaking with him right now. I don't know if they have officially announced it yet but that's where we're at and that's what he discussed with me yesterday."

On Gilbert being welcomed back if he leaves the team:

"I think so. If he opts out and he wants to come back, definitely I'm going to take him back. He's a great player and he's a great young man. I recruited him and we treat him like family, just like everyone else."

"Neil Farrell opted out and he wanted to come back and I gave him the opportunity."

They don't want a college education, they want one year to make their case and move on to the pro's. You can thank the nba for this.

I think I'll call into a sports show and talk about "Heart," even though I haven't showered today.

This is why I said Terrace quit. You're either on the team or you're not. You're either committed to playing or you're not. No one is special. This is affecting everyone. And is he going to be homesick in the NFL? Seriously? Sorry Coach, I can't play anymore cuz I miss my mommy. This is ridiculous on the surface.

He's only opting out of a wasted season. You put up more W's, and they are all still playing. No need to risk injury, on a year like this.

The team has a chance to end strong. It DOES matter. It will ALWAYS matter. Character isn't a sometimes thing.

It’s as much on the players as it is the staff. No team leadership

I swear every time Coach O opens his mouth this season I lose my love for him more and more. I think that the divorce really got to him mentally, and it’s tough to blame him for that, but damn is this getting worse and worse.

Why not play the players that want to be there? To a lot kids on the team, being an LSU player is a dream come true. With the shite show now; it is the time to see who really wants to still be part of the team.

Yes we are fine. No one player will kill the program. You can only play who are committed. So yeah, we're gonna be fine. If ya have to go home to your mama then go...We need MEN at LSU who want to PLAY AT LSU.

"Yes we are fine. No one player will kill the program" .... but a bad head coach sure can kill it.

This “leave and we’ll take you back” shite is only empowering them to go. And then to throw out “otherwise it’s next man up.” How is he not selling this kid on how much we need him? How great his future is here? How he’s going to break records and win championships and go play in the nfl and LSU will get him there? I can only hope he’s saying that privately, but I don’t think it hurts anything to say that publicly too. For fricks sake, the kid is one of the best recruits LSU has ever landed. He came in with hype and hope. The season hasn’t gone well but O has to find a way to look at the guys in the program right now and reassure them that this set of trials and tribulations will pass, we’ll come out on the other side and we’ll be back to winning championships next season. And maybe that starts with an apology to them for not understanding their political strife. Who knows? And frankly, I don’t give a frick if O is a card carrying Trumper, he needs to find a way to bridge that gap if it exists. If there is lingering resentment among the players, it’s got to be addressed. The team is falling apart and I haven’t heard shite about one team one heartbeat. This is a full on meltdown by the coaching staff and it’s like he doesn’t give a frick.

You can't convince someone to stay. They either want to be here or they don't. If they don't want to be here then clear the cancer out now. You gotta move on. It's not political. It's not anything but kids who are too immature to realize that they're terrified of the common cold.

Coach O better grip on this. I understand Kids getting home sick and all but the NCAA is basically giving kids free Reign to do whatever they want with no consequences. Between opting out and Transfer Portal this can be a program killer. Where is the accountability? I'm angry at the coach. Well im transferring. Im not starting well im transferring or opting out. These kids are learning to just leave and not be responsible.

Doesn't make any sense. How does a coach get a grip on this? Beats him down and says, "No you're not leaving!"? College football is taking a slow trek downhill. Within 5 years, it will move to a 1 and done sport like the other sports. COVID made all this possible this year. Not having a great year? Eh, I'll opt out. It's chicken shite no matter what way you look at it. And yes, if we had a great year, this probably wouldn't be happening, but Jamar started the trend. 1 does it, they all do it.

There is no grip on a persons character. You either have it or you don't. No one can sway you if you are firm in your beliefs. Kids who want to play at LSU will. Those that are there for a business decision might make a different decision. One thing is for certain: we're gonna know who really wants to be a TIGER.

Farrell, "opted out" with a legitimate COVID concern. Gilbert would just be quitting. You wouldn't be able to field a team if everyone just quit when they missed home.
