A costly muffed punt early in the 2nd half by LSU wide receiver Jonathan Giles vs. Texas A&M allowed momentum to shift back to the Aggies right after the Tigers tied up the game at 17-17 with a 90-yard scoring drive.

Following the drive, LSU's defense forced the Aggies to go three-and-out but Giles muffed the punt giving Texas A&M the ball on LSU's 29-yard line. Eight plays the later the Aggies scored to go up 24-17.

The muffed punt was a critical play in the game Saturday and LSU has dealt with punt returning issues all season.

Head coach Ed Orgeron joined 104.5 ESPN’s Off the Bench Tuesday morning and was asked whether or not the coaching staff will try out new options at punt returner with the time off before the bowl game.
quote:

“Yes- no question," Orgeron said. "Kary Vincent came to me. We’ve been trying Jontre (Kirklin). Jontre can do it but we didn't want to put him back there in a pressure situation and fumble. Kary Vincent has come to me and he has done it, and I got a couple recruits now who are committed who are very good punt returners."

“But we need to get better in that area. No question about it.”

the speed of the game in the SEC is greater than Giles can handle. goes to show the gap of talent from where he was to where he plays now.

So it took the last game of the regular season for Coach to see this?

Giles brings absolutely nothing to this team. Dude is worthless.

I'd like to see you do better

True or not, that is unnecessary.

I hate to call a young guy a disappointment, but after his production at tech I thought he would do more. Maybe he just isn't used right.

Big 12 is soft and his starting spot was up for grabs.

While he had better stats at Tech, Patrick maholmes was his QB and they were air raid offense all the way

"Jontre can do it but we didn't want to put him back there in a pressure situation and fumble." Ummm...that's what is currently happening.

Well Jontre fumbled on his first carry, so Im not sure he would be any better.

Well, he caught the remaining punts... hesitantly. I see where CEO's coming from. After watching a comrade drop a punt, a newbie who is thrown into a hostile environment many times can do worse.

I know the refs screwed us out of that game but honestly this right here is what screwed us, if that punt doesnt get muffed with the momentum LSU had they more than likely would have put points on the board instead of what happened

Speaking as someone who was at the game, I completely agree. I was absolutely sulking when it happened. The place went nuts and Kyle Field was absolutely electric from that point on. Giles lost us the game.

So we just wait till players address it?

That's what I took from it too, which is extremely concerning.

O is way too reactive, great leaders are proactive and prevent these types of things from blowing up before they change. Giles had no business being out there for half the season, we could all see that he was inadequate after 2-3 games!

You didn't see them try a different returner weeks ago. I'd say that was proactive. We just didn't have the guy to do it in the middle of the season

It was dumb to be putting Giles back to return punts vs. Rice, Ole Miss and Southeastern. Games where you are supposed to see what you really have to work with and build experience.
