According to Nola.com, the LSU fraternity Delta Kappa Epsilon will end it's gameday banner tradition and has apologized to LSU for shedding negative light on the University by mocking the NFL's first openly gay player, Michael Sam.

In the apology letter, Deke said they would stop hanging signs in front of their house "indefinitely."
quote:

"Zeta Zeta is a chapter full of rich traditions, one of them being our game day banners," the fraternity wrote.

"Though satire is sometimes the goal, crossing the line and causing offense to others is never the intent," the letter from the DKEs, addressed to LSU President and Chancellor F. King Alexander, said. "We truly apologize to you and all other members of the LSU community who have had to deal with the effects of this banner."
quote:

The banner reading, "Michael isn't the Only Sam Getting the D Tonight," was displayed the day LSU defeated Sam Houston State University 56-0 in Baton Rouge in the first home game of the season.

For a Vandy game in the 80s, I remember my Dad trying to explain away "Shoot the Seamen" and a paper mâché cannon that looked conspicuously like a penis.

Sad to hear they're stopping the practice. Frankly I thought this particular banner was nowhere near their most offensive. I think they've gone over the line many, many times, and I've pondered how I would explain some of their more salacious jabs to my kids (if they ever saw / asked). But, I absolutely HATE the fact that the DKEs bowed to the political correctness crowd--particularly on this issue.

I'm sure if this banner was satirical towards Christianity or White people y'all wouldn't be saying "just a joke". Get out of your holes.

Michael Sam read this article and tweeted "free speech, my arse. No, seriously, 'free speech' it"

I have yet to grasp what is offensive about this to anyone. Can someone please break it down for me? Don't just say because it mentions Michael Sam like he is Yahweh and we are all Jewish. What specifically is offensive?

WHAT A JOKE this world has become!!! I mean these are the DEKES we are talking about .....the same guys who for the Rice game during Gary Hart scandal said "Gary Hart says eat rices spread" which is vulgar but genius...so why can't they make a gay joke? comedians make jokes about gays all the time...blacks make fun of whites etc....ITS A JOKE!!!!!....wow as an alumni I am appalled that NO ONE has a sense of humor anymore.....by the way someone joked about Ray Rice saying maybe he should join the Cowboys because both aren't beating anyone anytime soon....

It was off-color and vulgar... But then again these are college kids we r talking about... Does anyone expect more, really? I blame ESPN for forcefeeding this whole Michael Sam thing to us... Now when some kids make light of it, everyone wants to put their hand over their mouths and go "ooooooooowweeeeee!!! I'm telling!!!"

Nobody but the stuffed shirts and homos care... And that's like .05% of society. Everyone else thinks its pretty darn witty and funny. (Albeit vulgar and un-called for)

The Va Tech massacre banner was worse. The one with the glory hole was worse. I'm sure we could start an entire thread with pictures people have taken of the Deke banner and most of them would be more revolting than the Michael Sam one here. Nevermind the fact that the thread would be about 30 pages long and it would just be the pictures. That's how long this tradition has been going on.

This is a fricking farce and I don't have any interest in the Dekes one way or the other.
