LSU will be without defensive tackle Maason Smith for the season opener vs. Florida State as the redshirt sophomore will be serving a one-game suspension due to an improper benefits violation from 2021.

Head coach Brian Kelly spoke with reporters Monday and said that even if Smith were eligible to play Saturday, he would be listed as questionable as he is still dealing with an ankle injury from fall camp.

Kelly also talked about the depth at defensive tackle which he is pleased with heading into the season opener.

Maybe Coach shouldn't say that. The NCAA may decide that since he's injured, it's not punishment enough

We should have said he was healthy enough for the bowl game last year, and that could have been his suspension.

all he said was he's not 100% even if he could have played (no NCAA suspension), as is the case for almost any player participating in fall camp. didn't say he was injured, or would have sat out, just said not 100%.
