LSU head coach Brian Kelly appeared on "SEC This Morning" on Monday to discuss the Florida win and was asked about his decision to name Kayshon Boutte a team captain vs. the Gators. Per SDS:
quote:

“First of all, you have to have your best players buy into the fact that we need to make some changes here from what we’re doing,” Kelly said. “I’m very proud of this entire football team and what we’ve asked them to do up to this point, they’ve done some really good things. But it’s not good for our standard of excellence and that was shown against a very good team in Tennessee.”

“The one guy who really stood out for us was Kayshon, the way he worked, the example he set during the week of practice,” Kelly said. “The first time, from my perspective, show himself as a leader of the football team. We made him captain for this game and you saw the way he played. He played with the kind of big-play ability that many people have been looking for.”
Kelly also spoke about Boutte on Saturday after the win:

Tired of hearing about all the Kayshon drama. If he's gonna play then he needs to ball out, but we need to quit pretending like he's Chase or Jefferson or any of the other guys that played their arse off while they were a tiger. I'd take Russell Gage all day before KB.

I don't know how you make it this far by not giving 100% ALL THE TIME. It has to take EFFORT to loaf at this stage. Glad to see he's remembering that work ethic that got him here. Way to go KB!

He would be dangerous on punt returns and even catch the ball at that

As much as I want KB to succeed, it’s still a little wild to me that it seems they have been coddling him like a pouting toddler until this point.. Hope he keeps this focus for himself and his team the rest of the season

I wouldn't say they've coddled him, but Kelly has definitely made Boutte a priority. He's a major talent and Kelly knows he's needed for this team to reach maximum potential.

In addition to winning football games, Kelly's other responsibilities include helping to mold some of these players into men.

He can and will be a big play maker. As a head coach these days, you are recruiting 24/7. Kids can leave anytime now. He wants to keep him here and not be a weapon for a team down the road.
