During his press conference on Monday, head coach Brian Kelly was asked how the coaches teach a killer instinct and avoid letting games slip away.
quote:

"It happens when you put in the work and it means so much that you just, under no circumstances, can you let somebody take it away from you," Kelly said. "You just can't let complacency come in at any time."
Kelly's response to the question led to talking about Kyren Lacy's and Major Burns' costly penalties in the season-opening loss to USC:
quote:

"Kyren is working on his emotional control. That young man, I love him because he's working on that every day," Kelly said.

"That wasn't malice. He's just such a high-strung young man, that's all he works on. He's in the locker room saying to himself, 'I need to maintain my emotional control.' He's working so hard on it.

"Same thing with Major Burns. He was so apologetic and so sorry that he took his helmet off. These aren't guys that are just like 'I don't care, that doesn't matter to me.' These guys are working so hard at it."

"It was just frustrating to me that these guys were working so hard. But we're going to get there and were going to break through, and you guys will see that."

Well he can’t exactly say, “These young men were never taught impulse control and emotional regulation as children, so what do you expect?”

Yep, and exactly what is, the punishment if any for these selfish "look at me" costly penalties Coach? We'll work on it and hug it out and hope they stop doing it. I predict we'll see it again.

If he has to work on it everyday we have an issue with him. Dont play shoot someone. That is a no no. Christ, this wasnt a getting slapped in the head and pushing back.

I mean...don't take off your helmet until you're on the sidelines. He has to work on THAT?

This is on the Offense coach. You looked like Les Miles out there trying to run against a stuffed box and everyone knew you were going to run and what happened? They got stuffed 4/5 run plays when you should have been throwing.

How can someone be so dumb and have so little emotional intelligence that they can’t stop themselves from pretending to shoot somebody and acting it out on the football field. Just sounds like BS excuses to me

Maybe Brian Kelly is telling himself that Kyren Lacy is something that he’s not and just hoping for it to come true. It’s like when a momma blindly defends her child and says “He good boy. Do nuffin wrong”.

if you’re blatantly offsides just keep going and have them call the play dead before they get a free shot????
