Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports
Former LSU coach Johnny Jones was named head coach at Texas Southern on Monday.

Jones was fired from LSU in March of 2017 after five season's in Baton Rouge and spent last season as an assistant coach at Nevada.

The former coach played for the Tigers from 1980-1984 and was a member of Dale Brown's coaching staff for 13 seasons (1984-97). During his five years as head coach 2012-2017, the Tigers made the NCAA Tournament just one time.

Johnny is just biding his time until the Duke or North Carolina job opens up.

I really liked Texas Southern's head coach. Everything he did was in preparation for the SWAC Tourney, because winning that and getting an NCAA automatic bid is all that matters if you're TSU. He could go 0-13 in the non-conference season and it wouldn't affect him. It was all about experimenting and getting ready for the SWAC Tourney.

Mike Davis became the coach of Detroit Mercy. Not sure that is a step up from Texas Southern, and I'm sure it's miserable to live there from Nov-March. More money, perhaps, but even then, "Why live where it sucks?"

You can't forget the success he had at North Texas. Hopefully, he does well there. LSU was just too big for Johnny. The SEC was growing, becoming more competitive. We needed someone fresh that...you know...could coach. LOL!

Looks like he missed the times when he would stand on the courtside with his arms crossed saying nothing as opposed to just sitting down on the bench as an assistant coach.
