Now that it's late September, the "horror movie recommendations?" types of threads will inundate this board as usual. I always have a list that I post when I see those threads since there have been some good/great discussions and recs in the past on here. So I will try to keep this running list going with any others that I stumble across. But this list is fairly encompassing (though not every thread) and covers a wide variety of topics. If any of the links don't work or aren't what I describe them as, let me know and I will fix them. The ones with just dates are generic "Horror recs" type threads. I'll RA that this is stickied for the time being to prevent too many new ones from being started.

Enjoy.

Started watching Dascham (the main character is so fricking annoying)

Might follow that up with Watching Attack the Block which I’ve heard good things about

Half way through No One Can Save You. It’s fine.

A couple of werewolf movies I’ve never seen I have slated for this October.

I’ve heard good things about Talk to Me (2023, A24). It’s still showing at a few screens near me so I will try to check it out this week.

Nice sticky

Horror is not my genre. especially gory or spiritistic/possessed/demonic stuff. Like I wouldn't take a couple grand to sit through The Exorcist. Or that new Exorcist coming out, I can't even watch the preview, much less the movie. That stuff would mess me up.

With horror (not counting Sci-Fi horror like Alien The Thing, etc.), I prefer the classics. The OG Texas Chainsaw Massacre being my all-time favorite. Legitimately a scarry movie. The "real" factor to it adds the scary factor. Just something creepy about some people wondering off into the back woods and finding a crazy person. The way it was shot and the ending are just top notch.

Halloween would be a close second. Scream being my favorite modern horror. No telling how many times I've watched that, most of the times it's showing it to someone that hasn't seen it before.

If Psycho counts, that would be my #1. I don't think most people view that as a true horror film though.

1. Go to Tubi
2. Go to the Italian horror and Giallo category
3. Pick any random movie
4. Enjoy

Personally I've been going through the Dario Argento movies. Even his newer ones are at least more interesting than most modern horror. Tubi also a good selection of Lucio Fulci and Mario Bava movies. Lots of good stuff to choose from.

To add to this discussion, I'll add in some I've watched recently:

- The Wailing. Watched this last week and it's excellent. Slow burn for sure (2.5 hours), but it keeps you engaged throughout. And the last 15 minutes or so when things come together are fantastic.

- No One Will Save you. New one released on Hulu this past Friday. I liked it well enough, but it's not overly good. The best part is the initial 15-20 minutes or so with the home invasion. That was really well done and the aliens are some of the best looking ones in film.

- Gerald's Game. More of a psychological thriller than a horror, but it's pretty good. It's a little odd, and some of the material is difficult to watch. But all in all it's good at what it's trying to do and worth a watch.

- The Pope's Exorcist. This is pretty well done, and the acting was pretty good. All in all it gets a bit out there, as movies like this mostly do. But it was a solid watch, especially if you like possession type movies.

Others I've seen lately that aren't pure horror, but are scary/thriller types that I really enjoyed:

- Hotel Mumbai. Completely intense.

- No Escape (Owen Wilson movie). One of the most intense movies ever, and completely terrifying to me in a different way than typical horror.

- 65. Good, not great. But a nice watch and easy due to a short run time (90 minutes, credits included). Uptick for you if you like dinosaur movies (I do).

Funny enough, I had to remove AASB and the list of movies that were normally copied/pasted into that post.

As Above, So Below is a good bit better than Gerald's Game though. But they are completely different movies though. Sort of different genres altogether really.

I need to watch AASB again. It's been a few years since I've seen it.

Just saw it this weekend. It was pretty good. Worth checking out.
Seems I end up liking most A24 films I see.

Anybody else never hear the words "spooky season" until about a month ago, despite MSM/social media acting lately like it's always been a thing?

It's been a thing for years now. But full disclosure: I named the thread that to make it easier to find via a Google search for the future. It's literally the only reason I did that, as I generally hate the whole "spooky season" moniker.
