re: Which flights would you choose on a long journey to Antarctica?

I'm one of the biggest AA haters on this forum but will still fly them if the price and route is right. Unfortunately, the routing you mentioned is a non-starter given the other options available.

That's not the consensus view on Aerolineas -- it doesn't have a great reputation.
Yeah I guess I should temper my comments - my office paid for me to ride in first which made it much better than a 9 hour ride in coach. And they don't have a very sophisticated upgrade system so occasionally the seat next to me was empty, which is really nice.

May have to fly them or Jetsmart a couple times. Wife wants to go to Mendoza and we're looking at going to a couple spots after the cruise like El Calafate and/or Bariloche. Either one better than the other?
I ended up booking AM J for 125k MR points so not bad for 2 people. You get 1,600 AM points for every 1,000 MR points.
Does anyone know about International Terminal at SFO regarding using my one-time UA Club passes and if there's any issue using them with just an arrival boarding ticket? AM isn't Star so I'll only have my boarding ticket from the prior flight.

There used to be a daily to EZE out of D/FW on AA. Should be able to direct from HNL to D/FW then direct to EZE from there.
EDIT: Nvm. It goes through MIA.

Bariloche
Ive been to some scenic spots but that area probably takes the crown.

Did they fix that runway that was down at SFO last year?
Yeah I think so, flew out of there in June and landed on the long runways then took off on the shorter runways
Posted on 7/30/25 at 4:55 pm to CuseTiger
It reopened in June of last year.

Yeah a lot of them go through Miami. We ended up doing Aeromexico from SFO to Mexico to Buenas Aires. I have AA on the way back to SFO only 1 stop and both legs in lie-flats.

Nice, looking forward to it. Staying 3 nights at Llao Llao and since our TA is Virtuoso we get some extra perks. Gonna stay a couple nights right in town as well. Any recommendations while in Bariloche?

When are you making this trip?

Delta is the only airline that lets you in after arrival. So you won't be able to access the United Club. They aren't even in the same terminal as AeroMexico.
Do you have an AmEx Plat or CSR?

I ask because I was there in early March 2000 (right before everything shut down), and Bariloche was incredibly dry, dusty, and just basically unpleasant. I suspect that very late summer is simply a bad time to go, but it ended up being my least favorite place in Argentina. I don't even have any pretty pics from there. It reminded me of Queenstown, New Zealand, but seemed inferior.
About some of the other places you mentioned:
Ushuaia
The best thing that we did there was go to Martillo Island, which has some 5000 penguins. You will certainly have seen enough Gentoo and King penguins by this time, but the majority of the penguins on Martillo are Magellanic, and Antarctica is too cold for them. If you go, make sure to reserve in advance one of the rarer tours that has permission to go onto the island. Most of the tours do not have this permission, and you are only allowed to observe from the boat, which would be a much inferior experience.
The Tierra Del Fuego National Park is very pretty, but not what I would term "spectacular." It was a nice hike.
We also toured the historic prison (interesting enough), but Ushuaia doesn't have a lot of "top" attractions aside from Martillo Island, and I'm not sure how exciting it would be for someone who's already spent a number of days observing penguins. If I were you, I might plan a day there after the cruise to rest and recover, but not much more than that.
El Calafate
The Perito Moreno glacier is awesome and well worth the hour-long (or so) drive (we rented a car and drove ourselves), but you don't need to spend hours there. This is basically a half-day excursion.
But El Chalten is one of Patagonia's two elite hiking destinations. The other is Torres del Paine in Chile, but Torres is better suited for multi-day treks, while the El Chalten area is best for day-hikes, which is what we wanted to do. Mt. Fitz Roy is just incredible:
I really wished that we'd skipped Bariloche and and spent another day in El Chalten and hiked in the Cerro Torre area, which is normally considered equally magnificient.
Anyway, those are my thoughts, which are, as I said, based on an early March trip.

Mid Nov through mid Dec. The cruise is Nov 14-Dec 1. We fly in on Nov 6th and leave on Dec 10th so we have days in front and after. Hitting Iguazu on the front half and then Ush, El Calafate, and Bariloche on the back end.

Yeah, I have both CSR and Plat but would love to get my value out of the UA passes. I called UA and they said you can go in on arrival, but I'm not sure... Apparently you can walk to the other side of the international terminal in about 20 minutes and thats where a UA lounge is?
Posted on 8/1/25 at 10:40 pm to Sho Nuff
IIRC that would require you to re-clear security.
With Priority Pass you'll have access to the China Airlines Lounge and Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse, both of which I assume would be better than a United Club.
AeroMexico also uses the Golden Gate lounge as a contract lounge at SFO and, based on SkyTeam alliance rules, you can also access the Delta Sky Club.
Amex Also has a Centurion Lounge at SFO if you want to do some walking, it's moved to a temporary location due to construction.

Loved Queenstown. Yeah, we'll be there late spring/beginning of summer.

Nice. We're basically flying out from Ush to FTE that night so we may not have time to do this tour but I'm going to check.

Will look into it.

Debating how much hiking we'll want to do, but we'll have 2 full days in Calafate/Chaltan. Thanks for the advice.
We're staying 3 nights at Llao Llao which is supposed to be amazing and we get a free round of golf. My wife's friend is from Argentina and couldn't say enough good things so hopefully our experience is better than yours

Can't wait!
Have had an unreal 2 year run and just haven't posted all the trips because of the time it takes to do the photos. Yeah, I'm a bit lazy sometimes. Just since June of 2023 we've been to Spain, Portugal, Paris for the French Open QFs & Championship among other stuff, Latvia, African Safari (best trip ever), New Zealand, Australia where we did the AO QFs where we again saw Djokovic win, diving the GBR in Cairns, etc, then a 2 week trip to Peru which was phenomenal, and capped that one off with 10 days in Galapagos diving with hammerhead and cruising to other islands, etc. This doesn't even begin to cover USA travel so we have thousands and thousands of photos to sort! Just retired in January so eventually I'm going to have time to do all this sorting

I started a website to compile all of my trips, I'm north of 33,000 photos there and am still behind on getting trips posted!
