16 hours?

DFW-PVG and DFW-MEL are roughly 16 hour flights. I take these 1-2 times a year. Also do DFW-GRU, MSY-LHR, MSY-LHR-BLR, and PHL-AMS 1-2 times a year.

Natural light is "not relaxing"? What does that even mean? Certainly from our bodies' standpoint, it's the ONLY type of light that is actually good for you. Sitting in near total darkness in the middle of the day seems the opposite of relaxing.

Maybe "relaxing" isn't the best word, but if I am trying to watch a movie in the afternoon, or sleep at 5am, or hell sleep at 3pm because it is 3am at our destination, I don't want the sun shining on my face.

There is a reason the 787 has digital window shades, and the airlines darken them as soon as the plane is airborne.

Again - Someone can do whatever they want with there window. Mine is shut.

Definitely not an expert on this as I've only flown 3 times in the past 7 years, and I never had the window for those flights.

The last 2 flights we took, my oldest had the window seat and we had to pull her head away from the window too buckle her up during turbulence and when they were descending before landing.

Part of it must be the device addiction

I think this is a major part but may not be for screen clarity. Once immersed in the screen, they probably never look up again until the plane landed

quote:

Sometimes the crew even says "shades must be up for landing" and fliers just ignore them.

Don't recall ever hearing this, why would they need the shades up to land?

the person adjacent to you deciding randomly to turn on the blazing overhead LED (despite the fact that they are also looking at a screen and don't need it).

I have never done this myself, but I can understand. If I'm in a room that is too dark and am looking at a screen, I get bad eye strain and need to turn an adjacent light on. Doesn't happen often to me, but it is a thing.

Then what is it? A dance club? Feel free to rattle me off some better ideas of what to do on a cross-country flight.

Safety - allows eyes to adjust and to see if there is danger in the event of an emergency evacuation.

No clue, but its def more noticeable now. Don't know if its newer fliers who get in when they are closed to keep the aircraft cool and don't think to open them or what.

If I'm aisle, I always open the window on the row when I sit down and a majority of the time the person who sits at the window doesn't end up closing it

Well, I actually like these as a sort of compromise. They can be set to make it obvious it's daytime outside without having to blast direct sunlight.

Yep. For sure some of it is people just completely zombified.

The cure for this is to crack the damn shades so there is some daylight.

But to be clear, people leave them closed at night too.

When you watch TV at home or look at your phone, do you make sure to go into a closet and close the door behind you so it can be movie theater dark?

Why are we acting like we need ABSOLUTE DARKNESS just to look at a screen?

Even if the sun is out hard, i would still be a fan of leaving a 10% crack to let SOME light in.

Yeah I love the 787. I probably fly that 95% of the time. Occasionally I’ll take a 777. I mostly stick with AA. Didn’t like the 767 that much. Really miss the A330.

I do it too much to the point where I get a stiff neck after every window seat flight. I like following the landscpe and guessing cities.

Same. Flew from SLC to DIA last month and it was awesome.

Imagine arguing over this when you could just sit by the window and do whatever you want.

What a pussy

It's good to know that humans not averse to natural light are retards.

Several things:

Since I'm not a horrible a-hole, I am still sensitive to the sensitivities of others. Even if I'm at the window and it's obvious those around me might like the shade drawn, I will draw it for them.

Having a window seat "controls" maybe 2 shades at most. It's not like one commands sudden control of all the windows.

The thread is more about why has it changed to this new darker approach versus what can I do about it. I'm resigned to the situation as is.

Yeah, especially out west, it's amazing to track the flight visually - it's like seeing a life-sized map. It's sad that people are so ho hum they can't even appreciate the wonder.

I don’t disagree with you but for some people that’s the umpteenth time flying over that area so they have been there done that.
