Planning on going solo to the Traverse City area in August for a week. Adult kids, who live in Ann Arbor, will join for the weekend. I’m looking for a good place to stay and set up for the week. Interested in cafes, pubs, wineries, golf, and hiking. I found a couple of good old threads on TD about Traverse City; would be happy to set up shop there; is there any town (Leland?) better?
Thx in advance.

I don't have a lot to offer other than to say that area is fricking gorgeous. Make sure you get out on Torch Lake.

OMG! About my favorite place in the country to visit! So much to see and do. We try to go up that area once/year or near Cheboygan.

My comments will be limited to the Traverse City area, although if you want to drive up to other great cities on the lake like Petosky or Charlevoix you'd enjoy them. Great shops, restaurants etc.

Things to do off the top of my head...

Go see / hike Sleeping Bear Dunes National Seashore (Sea?? )

Tube or Canoe on the nearby Platte River.

Travel to amazing wineries on Old Mission Peninsula and Leelanau Peninsula.

Places:

Do you want a hotel or a rental house? A rental house on the water will go for at least $1000 a night if they’re even available this late (summer of 2025 is already booking up). A hotel option for kids is the Great Wolf Lodge. I’ve never been in it but it has an indoor waterpark. No views, though.

Restaurants:

Traverse City Guide!

Fine Dining: Blu. For something unique, try Stella, it's in an old mental hospital!

You'd love the small lakeside town of Leland! Get a "Chubby Mary" at The Cove!

Buy a bunch of stuff at Cherry Republic. Their gummy candies are terrific.

Go to Hartwick Pines and see a virgin White Pine stand.

If you don't mind driving a little bit:
Tahquamenon Falls in the UP and or Kitch-iti-kipi springs.

Alpena has: a free shipwreck museum, glass bottom boat shipwreck tours, Austin Brother brewery has good beer and food, Thunder Bay Winery, Nowicki's Brats are phenomenal.

It's National LAKEshore

Speaking of that - for a day trip, I can recommend crossing up to the UP and going to Pictured Rocks National LAKEshore. It's amazing.
