Traveling by train in Italy

I wish I could upvote your post more! There is no need to bring a ton of clothes when you travel.

No need to bring a ton of clothes, and there are laundromats everywhere (plus hotels with laundry service, or AirBnBs with washer/dryer).

I took the train to Austria with ski gear, so packing light wasn't an option. We had to bull rush out of there and only had about 15-20 seconds to spare. The train only stops for 3 min or so and then the next stop was 45 min down the tracks. Definitely start positioning yourself and bags for a quick exit at least 10 min in advance

The nice thing about trains is just get there early and you have tons of time to load up. Now you may have limited time to unload at a stop, but it’s not like it’s a subway.

Given that, yes you need to absolutely challenge every to only bring what they can manage themselves.

Every single woman doesn’t need a hair dryer for instance. Bring 3 pairs of shoes max and 2 is better, and only bring garments that match the shoes and everything you bring to give you more options.

Also, remind them worst case they shop over there. You aren’t going to antartica or the Amazon, there are stores that sell stuff.

Hey, at least she figured it out. I keep repeating the mantra of capsule wardrobe on this board, as it seems to be a foreign concept to some ppl. Plenty of travel blogs will spell it out, and it isn’t hard to do no matter the season. I think too many women try to wear exactly what they would wear at home...which doesn’t usually work, space wise. Buy some travel friendly fabrics and cuts, even if it’s not what you would wear ordinarily. Many lighter layers will keep you just as warm as two thicker ones, and the layered pieces are more versatile/useful over a long trip. I usually travel with black lined hiking pants in winter, as well as lululemon trousers worn over a base layer. I’ve worn them everywhere from a mountainside in Sicily (with fleece) to Michelin starred restaurants (with a silk scarf and cashmere sweater).

Also, Nalgene makes a nice set of bottles and jars in a clear plastic case, perfectly sized for TSA regs. Fill those 100 ml bottles and you should be good for 2 weeks.
