Where would you recommend I go right outside of Dublin for one day? I don't want to be on a bus for hours...just a short one day trip.

There's a small fishing village called Howth right outside Dublin. In fact, I'd recommend staying there to do Dublin, it's only a 10-20 minute train ride and is pretty. Quaint, picturesque place you think of, at least when I last went 10 or so years ago. Wicklow is pretty and close. National park with ruins, nice scenery and meadows, parts of Braveheart were filmed there. Depends on what you want to see/do, really. Kinsale on the south coast is beautiful, but may be farther than you're thinking.

I second Howth. You can ride the train (30 minutes or so) and spend a day in the village. There’s an awesome cliff hike that allows you to experience the countryside and there are some nice pubs nearby. It’s a great place to get away from the hysteria of the city.

+1 on Howth. If the weather is nice, you can take the train to Greystones and walk back to Howth along the coast path. It is marked with a railing along the steeper bits, but it is not for those with vertigo or fear of heights. Howth village has a number of waterfront restaurants, too. Easy train ride.

If you’re into history, a short ride into the valley of the Boyne will get you to the Hill of Tara (ancient seat of Irish kings) and even better, the Neolithic passage tomb of Newgrange. Newgrange has an decent interpretive center with exhibits, cafe, etc, then you ride a small bus to the actual tomb site.

Take the DART from Dublin a few stops to Greystones. Walk the sea cliff trail to Bray . In Bray eat at The Happy Pear . Take the DART back to Dublin.

You can get tours to Wicklow (about an hour south of Dublin) for around 20 euro. One of the most beautiful areas I visited in my time there.

Most trips stop at the Guinness lake and St. Kevin's monastic ruins (beautiful hike and the inn serves a locally brewed red ale that is fantastic).

This is what I meant earlier. Lough Gur is a similar site on the other side of the island.

In the same general area as Wicklow mts. is the lavishly landscaped Powers Court estate. Fans of English style gardens should definitely make the effort to visit it, esp in warmer/longer daylight months. You can get there on public transit (train to bus, with a bit of a walk at the end).

I totally agree with County Wicklow. I love the feel of that entire area. Glendalough is beautiful . A day trip from Dublin ( leavingfrom my fave Hotel The Shelbourne) is like $35 . LINK

I would take the train to Belfast or Kilkenny. In Belfast, you can explore the city center on foot, take a Black Taxi tour (of the civil war sites) and finish off with the Titanic museum. Kilkenny has a lot of interesting stuff too.

Newgrange. About an hour north of Dublin by car. 6000 year-old passage tomb that's by far the coolest man-made structure I've ever been in.
