All,

I'll be in Convington for work and I am hoping to fly out of MSY on a Friday at 7:10pm.

Google maps tells me the drive is ~1 hour.

So really two questions here. If I leave work Friday at 5pm in covington, is it realistic i can get to the airport by 6? Also, is getting to MSY just about an hour ahead of a domestic flight enough time?

Leaving Covington at 5 puts you in peak traffic. How far is work from the Causeway? What is your route?

Should be able to get their by 6. HOWEVER: often times the Causeway will be shut down due to inclement weather. If it is, you would be pretty fricked and have to take an alternative route that would add some time. I would make sure the weather and wind will be fine on Friday morning. Rain and so on is fine. if there is high wind they may close the bridge.

The new airport has been a little unpredictable. MOST people have said its a breeze and they have gotten through security in just a few minutes. There are have been some pockets of longer times.

I personally would feel great anxiety cutting it that close, but that's up to you.

I would leave no later than 4:30, personally.

Work is a stone's throw from where 25 meets 190 on the northwest side of covington so ~20 minutes from the causeway. Route was planning on being the causeway south to I10 unless a better route is recommended.

It's possible i can start early that day with the hopes of leaving closer to 4 instead of 5. Based on the initial response i'm thinking this might be necessary.

If you can squeeze an extra 15 mins and leave at 445pm it is an absolute yes. If not just could be a bit closer. Do you have pre check or clear?

Leave at 3. Traffic, new airport, parking, Friday afternoon, storms rolling in, etc are reasons to be early than late.

There will be plenty to once you're last security in the airport. Leaving work at 5 in North Covington is a terrible idea.

If you’re dropping a rental car I’d leave no later than 4:30. If you’re just parking at the terminal...4:45.

5 would be pushing it and not leave much wiggle room

You will be lucky to make it to the Causeway by 5:45 if you leave work at 5. Add another 30 minutes across the bridge, then another 15-30 from Causeway to the airport with no issues.

No way you make the flight if you leave 25/190 at 5 ok on a Friday afternoon.

Give yourself 2 hours for that drive. Between Covington, Causeway, and I-10 West, Friday afternoons are hell.

Throw in confused boomers at the airport and you have a missed flight waiting to happen.

ETA: I would leave no later than 4

All this.

I’m actually an overly cautious traveler and I’d probably leave closer to 2:30 and just grab a drink and bite to eat at the airport. Not worth it to miss a flight.

what about taking I12 to I55 south to I10 East? Could there be any benefit there?

Not really. I12 is a fricking shitshow of epic proportions.

You can check google maps later today and see what it says.

As others have said, the more I have thought about it, the more I have thought you need to leave earlier, than you thought.

3 if you can. Absolutely no later than 4.

Agreed. I’d check Waze, but 12 to 55 typically isn’t going to save you much, if any, time.

I do have TSA precheck, so that should help but i'll prob end up arranging a 4pm exit or looking into other flight options.

I have a reminder set to check google maps today at 4pm so i'll get an idea of what to expect.
