Thinking about taking a train trip from New Orleans to Portland Oregon. Needing input from those who have made similar trips. Just checking on your experiences.

US trains blow. They are slow and usually 5 or 6 hours behind schedule. What would take you 5 hours to drive often takes 10 on a train I used to take trains but stopped for reasons mentioned

Why can't we have a train system like Europe? 180 MPH and usually on time.

Also, the track sharing between Amtrak and the private railways (BNSF, UP, NS) always is a big hold up. I know that was one of the huge issues between Chicago and NYC/DC.

If you want to travel by train, try flying to LA and taking a train to Seattle...or you can just do a portion of it. LA to Portland for instance.
I hear that is a nice ride

Amtrack runs slooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.
I know people that took it from Pensacola to San Antonio and it took over 30 hours.
I took Amtrack from Chicago to Bloomington Il which is a 2 hour car drive, and it took over 5 hours. It was supposed to be like 2.5 hours and there was a major delay due to snow. I was good with a delay, but not double the freaking time.

That route is actually on my short list of US trips. I'd like to do it from San Francisco to Seattle.

I just booked trains between Rome-Naples(1 HR 13 M) then Naples to Florence (3 HR) for our upcoming trip.
Crazy fast, why would I rent a car for those runs?
Too bad we can't get an infrastructure like that here in the states.

You’d have a horrible time. I agree with others that you should train portions of it. Denver to SLC driving through the Rockies via train would be nice.

Because we are a Suburban country. Europe is based on small localized townships and old walking cities. You take a train to the middle of the city and can walk or ride anywhere reasonably.
Let's take the Dallas to Houston train as an example. What if you want to go from Fort Worth to the Woodlands but the train only goes from downtown Dallas to downtown Houston?
ETA: Also, trains make a lot more sense for people that don't have cars and tourists. For locals that own a car, train travel even when great still doesn't make a lot of sense especially when you have multiple people going.
