Honestly, I would not have had Tahoe on my list. That's why I threw it out there.
Thanks to all.
Thanks to all.

Olympic National Park. Has the added benefit of ocean, as well as mountains with hiking, fishing, camping, etc...
Seattle is not far, but Port Townsend is a good place on the water to find great restaurants and shopping.
If you have 3 families, and I'm assuming you have some people who want to do hardcore hiking/fishing, whereas others may be into the restaurants/shopping/nightlife, then you may want to look into Bend, OR. Bend has the social scene, but there is plenty of white water rafting, hiking, horseback riding, and other activities for everyone at all levels. There are also nearby places like Smith Rock, Cove Palisades, and Crater Lake.
If you are looking to get away from the crowds (I assume because you talked about all the douche bags), the the Wallowa Mountains in eastern Oregon are a relatively unkown treasure. Baker City has one of the best breweries in the country, and a short trip north takes you to Walla Walla, WA, which has some fantastic wineries (over 100 of them). We enjoyed camping at Anthony Lakes campground, which is about 30 minutes from Baker City. If you want solitude, that is a good place to go.

North or Center Conway, NH or the nearby Omni Mount Washington Hotel.
Easily accessible from BOS. Lots of great restaurants. Plenty of hiking and other outdoor activities. I think there are several houses on Conway Lake that are posted on VRBO, etc. Take the cog train up Mt. Washington. 90 minute drive from Kennebunkport, ME to check out the beach and cool town. Amazing weather.
