Wife and I (no pics) are looking to take a little beach trip in a couple months and are considering Clearwater. We live in Savannah and are looking for somewhere that is not to far of a drive and do not really want to go to any Atlantic beaches. We are bringing our dog so we want something that is relatively close. We figured Clearwater beach would be good being it's proximity to Tampa would give us plenty of stuff to do and condos there seem pretty reasonable. I see it is consistently listed at one of the top beaches in the Us though I have not been. I have spent a good time in Clearwater and the Tampa area in the past though. Thoughts on the area, things to do, food recs etc would be appreciated.

It's nice. However, the traffic in and around that area sucks. Park yourself there and you'll enjoy it. Frenchie's has great fried seafood.

It’s about a 5-6 hour drive to cape San blas, Fl from Savannah, that was our stopping point when we lived in Virginia... very dog friendly... can have bonfires on beach. No traffic or high rises or hotels. Stay barrier dunes or sea cliffs if you want a condo

Stay at the Sand Pearl Hotel - great place for couples or families

March and April are spring break hell months for Clearwater Beach. Traffic is awful, beaches are packed and not pup friendly. During spring break months the police are on constant booze patrol. Head to St. Pete Beach, Lido/Siesta key beaches. Ft. Desoto near St. Pete beach has an off leash dog beach as does Davis Island in Tampa.

Lido Beach Resort in Sarasota is not far from there and is an outstanding dog friendly resort in a great area.

I read that article a couple weeks ago when I was telling my wife how they were taking over the downtown area. I used to spend a week in the Tampa area for work about once a month or so. Driving thru downtown Clearwater was creepy and this was eight plus years ago. Amazing how much property they have gained in the last three years.

We decided on Siesta Key. Looks like our condo is near the Villages area. Looking for recs for food, activities etc. We will be bringing an inflatable kayak so interested in some places to paddle around.

Lived in Tampa 13 years, went to Siesta Key often. Cant really help with on key dining as it was mostly a day trip. If you go to St. Armand's circle for shopping and dining, go to the Columbia. Also Owen's Fish camp is really good. You can paddle on the backside of the key towards Casey key. Stephen King lives on that key.
