I always enjoy La Condesa, Sophia’s, Perlas, Laundrette to name a few....there are a lot of great places to eat. I’m not big on bbq or standing in line so places like franklin’s are not on my list.

A day trip to Fredericksburg is what me and wife like to do
Tons of wineries, a brewery, distillery, and enchanted rock to hike.

Veracruz for breakfast tacos, only don’t get the miga’s, get al pastor instead...go to the one on Caesar Chavez...there is a bbq truck next door that you can get delicious brisket kolaches while you wait for your tacos.
Head to Rainey, find a bar, get drunk, find a food truck...repeat.
If the weather is nice head to Treaty Oak.

Girlfriend is taking me on vacation to Austin for my 40th the second weekend of May. Some great recommendations in this thread.
We love BBQ, beer gardens, tacos, out of the way local places, country music (or live music in general), being near water.
We're staying at the Catherine, so pretty central and will plan to check out South Congress, Rainey St, some good BBQ (as others have noted, LaBBQ seems like a great option), maybe a day trip out of town for a float trip or BBQ, a craft brewery or two. Probably do a bit of time on 6th st, but my friend is a local and tells me they call it "dirty 6th" so probably won't spend too much time there. I don't think we need to rent a car except for the days we're heading out of town.

Stroll down 6th street once to say you did it, that's the only reason I can think of anyone over the age of 18 going there.

Ah, it's one of those scenes

So it's not even worth checking out for the music? Or is that better elsewhere?

Well 6th Street is many things.
There's West 6th, Dirty 6th, and East 6th.

hen go skip the whole line and pick it up and go to zilker with a 6er.
Some of the best bbq in Texas, without the wait, and a fresh local ipa looking at the Austin skyline from zilker still makes me go from 6 to midnight and I do that shite all the time.
So I was reading up on this and it sounds like it's legal to drink outside in most areas of Austin unless otherwise noted. Is that accurate?

Head out to Oasis Brewing to watch the sunset over Lake Travis.

Only in downtown north of the river open containers are banned (for the most part). You can have a non glass container and walk around south congress

No it is not legal but nobody really gives a shite, just don’t be an arse about it.
ETA: seeing above is interesting. Didn’t know that. Cool.

south congress is really the only area where you can walk around and drink on the street that is worth a shite. but yes you can as long as it isnt glass. people will look at you crazy, but no cop can write you a ticket for the beer. they can however write you up or arrest you for PI.
most of the places where you are touring (rainey, sixth street, east side etc) no open container.
*i used to think anything south of the river was ok, but seeing auditorium shores/doug sahm hill in red is news to me. never been harassed before.

my best advice came in this thread. i feel like we need an official austin thread for this board. something that covers the basics like abitafan did for boston.
i can handle the strip club reviews if need be

I'm going in June and used this thread for guidance. What would you suggest and what is the terrible advice?

Yeah, putting the actual "good advice" would be more helpful than just shitting on what everyone else has said to to try and help.
Checked out the menu and scene at Perlas and we both think it looks good. Also, walkable from The Catherine where we're staying.
Gonna keep researching.

Despite being relatively close to the coast there aren’t a lot of great seafood places. Perlas is good. They probably have the best oyster selection in town. Trendy spot, you may need reservations depending on day/time.
welcome to your first day in Austin

Anyone have any thoughts on Fixe? A buddy mentioned it last night and the menu looks solid.

Just got back last night. Did just about everything we wanted to but missed a few things.
Stayed at The Catherine in an air BNB with a great view of downtown and river. Great location to hit all the hot spots. We did a 3 day BCycle subscription, which made it really easy to get to everything in the city without ubering everywhere, and it's easier to take stuff in when biking.
Did the following:
Lunch at LaBBQ: Fantastic, everything was really good, especially the fatty brisket, ribs, and chipotle sausage. Getting there gave us a tour of Cesar Chavez neighborhood
Dinner at Perla's: Also very good, right in the S Congress strip. Didn't get to sit outside, but still a very cool scene and really good food. I had the redfish, the lady had the grouper. Got their version of oysters rockefeller and those were also a hit
Rainey St: An easy walk from our place. Really loved the scene down there. Very cool, organic stretch of bars to check out. A couple food truck parks with great options. This is a must for those visiting.
Barton Springs: Really cool setup. You have to sneak your booze, which we did. There were also burrs in the grass, but we just wore our sandals. Decent amount of folks going topless. Water was cold.
Dinner at Fixe: Didn't sit outside here either, but the place was really nice and the food was fantastic. She had a seafood dish that I can't recall and I had the duck.
6th St: We were meeting friends on E 6th, so we walked the "dirty" portion but didn't stop. Seemed interesting, but almost a bit too much. E 6th had a lot of cool places. We stopped at Yellow Jacket and a few others.
ABGB: Stopped by for a couple beers. Cool place with a nice outdoor area. Pizza looked good and they had live music inside.
Salt Lick in Driftwood: A couple locals we talked to lowered my expectations, but we really liked it. The ribs we super good, brisket was solid, sausage very good. Sides were underwhelming.
Tubing the Guadalupe: Went through Texas State Tubes, and this was my favorite thing we did all weekend. Really pretty float, tons of people out there having a good time, but everyone was super nice. Half the fun was listening to and chatting up the other folks out there.
Torchy's Tacos: This was a last minute thing the morning of our last day. The breakfast tacos were solid. I'd have liked to try a few other places for more tacos and queso (Matt's El Rancho didn't happen).
Overall a really cool vibe down there, lots of unique neighborhoods, limited chain stores and restaurants, which I love. A surprising amount of natural water that you can access. No surprise it's still blowing up. I could count 8 construction cranes from the view on my balcony. I also noticed that virtually every bar/restaurant outdoor area was kind of the same. Fortunately I love the big/old trees with strings of lights scene. String lights were EVERYWHERE. Also, there was less of a country scene than I expected. Was looking for some good original country and cover bands or performers.
A couple pictures:
