Been there and seen similar on a trip to Tanzania.

We ended up booking the cruise direct with Viking as they had/have a sale that offered $250 ship credit and the drink package along with reduced air (that we aren't using).

Didn't hear back from the parents travel agent while I was visiting them last week, saw the sale and we just pulled the trigger.

Parents want to do Tuscany before the cruise, so we will probably go with Viking for that due to the logistics of getting to Venice. We are staying in Greece a few days after on our own. Already really looking forward to it.

There are paper maps at all of the shops. Still have first one I bought in 2010.

It is an easy train ride from Florence to Venice and the train drops you off right across the bridge from Pizalle Roma which is the main transportation hub for vaporettos (water bus) and water taxis to get to the island.

Yeah, if it was just me and the wife we would do our own thing. Parents are concerned about missing the ship and are more comfortable with it being on Viking to get us there. They have been Venice and don't want to go there a day early. At the end of the day, this is probably the last time they will travel abroad so I am just going with the flow.

You can’t go wrong booking everything through Viking. Their system runs like clockwork.

Looking at booking rooms in Hotel Grande Bretagne in Athens for post cruise. Dolli isn't available for our dates, but interested in others opinons for hotel options.

We will have two full days in Athens after, plan on going to Delphi on our cruise excursion, then the Acropolis and surrounding area on one of these days.

I saw a recommendation for the island of Hydra, which looks interesting but not sure my parents will be interested. They are in good health for almost 80, but I think Delphi and the Acropolis will wear them out so not sure another walking day is wise. Any other recommendations for the other day?

That looks like a good hotel in a good location.
I said above that if I were to stay at an Athens hotel I would want it to be near the Plaka district. This one is.

We spent three nights in Hydra and loved it. It is a nice, relaxing place with beautiful scenery. And it is small so you don’t have to do a lot of walking unless you want to hike the trails.
But if you only have two days in Athens, I can see why your parents wouldn’t want to go there just for a rushed day trip.

For two days, there is plenty enough to do around your hotel.
I climbed up Acropolis Hill to the Parthenon. My wife didn’t want to do that because she thought it would require too much climbing on steep, uneven steps and rough terrain. It wasn’t that bad in most places, but your parents may want to take that into consideration.
While I was climbing, my wife stayed in the Acropolis Museum at the bottom of the hill which is not far from your hotel. She enjoyed it.

With one free day in Athens, I wouldn’t mind just hanging around the atmospheric Plaka district where there are plenty shops, cafes and restaurants.

Place we stayed in mid-March:

Athesense

Through Booking.com.

Athesense Suites appealed to us because it offers a strong balance: close to Athens’s main sights, but just outside the busiest tourist zone.
Guests consistently praise the friendly, helpful staff and describe the rooms as clean and comfortable. The rooftop pool is a major advantage during the hottest part of the day, and the Acropolis view is an added bonus.

The metro is about a 10-minute walk away, and Plaka, Monastiraki, Syntagma Square, and many historic sites are either walkable or a short ride away. While the immediate neighborhood may not be especially scenic, the hotel offers a very good mix of location, comfort, service, and value.

One we walked by that looked nice:

Regal

FYI, thoroughly enjoyed going to this Restaurant. Small, family run place in a local neighborhood a couple of blocks from the hotel.

This is probably what I will push for.

Thanks. Hotel looks close to the other one we are considering. The family style suite might be a good fit.

Will make sure to check out the restaurant while we are there.

It was a great hotel for our purposes, even had a kitchen. Walk to the Plaka area was maybe 10 minutes.

Having said that just be aware that most neighborhoods in Athens kind of look a little nondescript to me. It’s clearly very walkable and you don’t feel unsafe at all. And people were very friendly to us. Food and drink were amazing. Just be aware I don’t think Athens is among the prettier cities in Europe. There’s so much history that it makes it worth the trip. That’s the appeal. I mean you’re looking at the Parthenon!
