I thought I would give a report from the Viking Empires of the Mediterranean cruise.
We are just leaving Corfu after eight days in Greece.
We arrived in Greece last Wednesday and spent 2 1/2 days on the Island of Hydra which we chose because it is a fast and easy ferry ride from the Athens Port of Pireaus.
And it is a beautiful and relaxing place. There are no private vehicles on the island. Everything is within walking distance and if something needs to be transported, mules do the work.
We stayed at Hotel Leto which I highly recommend. It is a first class hotel on a quiet back alley near the waterfront
There are some excellent restaurants in town, many with indoor and outdoor views of the harbor. One such place is Piato, a family run seafood specialist.
On our last night we had dinner at Omilos. We sat outside on the terrace with the town viewable from one side and the waves crashing against the rocks on the other. And the food lived up to the ambience.
We loved Hydra.

Then it was on to Athens on Saturday to board the ship at Piraeus.
On Sunday I climbed to the Parthenon at the top of Acropolis Hill. That was quite an experience.
And the Plaka District at the bottom of Acropolis Hill is a lively neighborhood with many shops, cafes and restaurants. If I had to stay in an Athens hotel I would want it to be near there, because I saw a lot of areas where I would not want to stay.
Then it was on to some beautiful Greek Islands.

The next three ports were Santorni , Olympia and Corfu.
The good thing about coming this time of year is that the weather is nice and the crowds are small, compared to the summer months.
In Santorini we climbed the steps and got the iconic views of the whitewashed buildings and churches with the blue domes set against the blue sky and blue water. It was beautiful.
In Olympia we went to the Ancient site of the original Olympic Games. There was a lot more to it than I thought there would be. The ruins of the temples and event venues are still there, though most are laying on the ground because of an earthquake centuries ago.
Corfu is a pretty place with an atmospheric Old Town. We have been having perfect weather with the exception of the day we were in Corfu when we got rained on a little bit.

Thanks.
By the way, no matter what bar or restaurant I go to, Washington pops up. I told him your story and he got a big kick out of it. He remembers you very well.

LOL! Made my year right there.
We always sought out he and his brother KD. As noted, they were very special to our group. We obviously tipped them but also gave each a Tennessee Titans beanie as a gift. You should have seen Washington's eyes when we first pranked him. Was sitting at dinner with our friends. One is about 6' 4", maybe 250lb. Head completely shaven. Goatee. Looks the part. When we said we were part of an operation with the South African Navy and got diverted to rescue this guy out in the middle of nowhere on a jet ski...Magic!
There also may still be one of their sommeliers from Bosnia, Goran. If so, and if you're up for it, we have another opportunity! He knows really well someone I got to know on another cruise from Serbia, Dalibor Varga ("Dali"). He's on the Viking Sea right now. Anyway, there's always this friendly banter between those nationalities and we pranked him too.
Couple of things he'll raise an eyebrow at:
Ask him if the ship has any dunja ("DOON-yah") on board (Dunja is the Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian word for quince — a yellow, hard, very fragrant fruit that looks like a muscular pear. Considered one of the “fancy” rakijas in the Balkans).
Another joke: Ask him if the ship serves burek? Then play dumb and ask him isn’t burek made with cheese? My friend says Bosnians are quite stubborn it could be that only with meat is considered “the actual thing” and therefore other variations have to have different names. Sirnica is with cheese for example.

Then it was to the Adriatic.
Right now the ship is getting ready to leave Zadar, Croatia. This is a pretty place. It has been a strategic maritime port for 3000 years. Because of that it was bombed during WW II so the Old Town is not as well preserved as it is in the other ports we have visited.
Two such ports were Dubrovnik yesterday and the much smaller Kotor, Montenegro the day before. Those were two beautiful places with the historic Old Towns completely intact.

Happy Sunday everyone.
Attended mass this morning in the Cathedral in Koper, Slovenia, part of which dates from the 12th century.
Getting ready to take off for Venice where the cruise will end.
This has been a wonderful itinerary and I highly recommend it to anyone.

And just like that it's over. Worst part of going on a cruise like that.
Looking forward to the trip report and some pictures!

Thanks.
We get spoiled on this ship.
At least we get to stay in Venice for a couple of days.

My favorite church out of all that I have visited is San Giovanni e Paolo in Venice. Nothing ornate about it; in fact, it is very pedestrian but something about it speaks to me. There are 25 Doges buried there.
If you visit, do not miss the chapel on the left side. The altar is pictured below.
The link below is one man's work to chronicle all churches in Venice.
