Going to Thailand. Leave end of December and will be there until January 10th. Flying into Bangkok and trying to plan an itinerary. Eyeing Phuket and Chiang Mai as possible destinations. Any help, suggestions, or insights on things to do or things/places to avoid would be greatly appreciated.

spent the first half of the year for work in Thailand .... was based in Chiang Mai.
Chiang Mai and the surrounding area is worth a stop for 3 days or so. Loads of temples. Lots of travellers and fairly westernized. Pai is a cool town to check out ... as are the Elephant sanctuaries (but avoid the ones where you can ride them)

also worked in Bangkok ... incredible city and fast paced. the street food is amazing, but you can also go super fancy there. worth a weekend for sure to see the spectacle.

didn't make it to Phuket ... but enjoyed Turtle Island. Great snorkeling and diving and not overcrowded like Samui.

by far my favorite part of that area is Vietnam. Amazing.

Would def recommend spending a few days in Chiang Mai. Try khao soi, you can only get it in north thailand and it was delicious.
Plenty of places to eat, drink, and party (Zoe in yellow). Also, the sunday night market in Chiang Mai was one of the better market experiences IMO.

I enjoyed two days in Bangkok but wouldn't do more than that.

Chiang Mai was easily my favorite stop. Spent 3 days there but would stay more next time.

We spent one day in Phuket but would probably skip it for more time elsewhere. Thailand has loads of islands to stay on. We stayed on Koh Phi Phi which i enjoyed, one side of the island is quiet paradise and the other side is euro techno party nonstop.

Don't ride elephants or support a place that allows it. We did and the place we went to preached about how well they treat them and you ride skin on skin where it doesn't bother them...all seemed good and then when we finished i watched them chain the creatures by their ankles. I WOULD NEVER DO IT AGAIN and would never recommend that to someone. Ignore the BS they feed. If you can ride an elephant I guarantee you they are mistreating them.

Spent 3 months in Thailand.

100% go to chiang mai. Elephant Jungle Sanctuary. YOU WILL THANK ME LATER. The best elephant sanctuary in Thailand. Don’t skip this.

From chiang mai go to Pai
They have magic mushroom milkshakes if you ask around

The island of phi phi is fricking incredible. No cars on the island— everything walking distance.

Phuket sucks! Skip it.

Koh Tao is insane and some incredible (and cheap) scuba diving. Worth it.

Do Bangkok 2-3 days, chiang mai and pai 3-4 days, phi phi 2-3 days, and koh Tao UF you’re trying to scuba.

How old are you?

Koh phangan has Full moon parties, if you’re under 30. Pretty awesome. 360 bar I think it’s called has mushroom shakes and a ridiculous sunset. It’s a mountaintop bar with a 360 view, amazing music and ppl

I’ll ask my buddy for the name but I think it’s 360 bar.

I did a really bad job following-up on this, but I really do appreciate the responses. I am 32 but the girlfriend and I have spurts were we party like we are in our mid to late 20's so definitely have interest there. Phi Phi seems right up our alley for sure and the full moon party would be great if we are there at the right time.

I've seen a good bit of anti-Phuket talk and was just curious why people are so down on it.

Thanks again for the responses and any other info y'all have is greatly appreciated.

Bumping this since I'm doing some research for my trip to Thailand next month.

During my research I always seem to see "Elephant Nature Park" recommended, but between the 2 companies websites the one you recommended does seem better. Could you describe your trip there a little bit?

Scroll down to Asia, then find Thailand. There are a few really good trip reports from fellow posters.
