I've heard that it's a shithole for the most part, but I want to take my son up to a crystal mine about 40 miles to the west of Hot Springs in the spring. He's totally obsessed with treasure hunting and I've seen a lot of videos where people actual find pretty decent crystals frequently. But for an 8 hour drive and 4-6 hours of actual mining, I'm hoping there are some other fun things to do.

Hot Springs will have some things to do and see
Skip Little Rock

If you want to continue further up, check out Buffalo River area near Jasper and Eureka Springs

Little Rock is the second biggest dump in the United States. However, Hot Springs has some nice areas. You can stay on Lake Hamilton and rent boats or jet skis. Lake Ouchita is a lot more secluded and a good place to relax and fish.

Lake Catherine State Park in Hot Springs is nice. Stayed in a cabin there.

I'm surprised nobody hasn't mentioned the Bill Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock. I heard there is an exhibit there featuring Monica Lewinsky.

Little Rock hate is overplayed. It's come a loooooong way in the last decade. Definitely not my favorite town, but it's a decent place to hang out if you like food and drink.

If he's into science, Hot Springs has the Mid America Science Museum and Little Rock has the Museum of Discovery. And, of course, the aforementioned Clinton Presidential Library

You'll find hiking in both locations, but more so in Hot Springs.

There's also the Crater of Diamonds State Park, if you'd like to dig for diamonds. Whatever you find, you keep.

Agree with LR. My distributor is there and I like staying downtown. Very clean and walkable and good food scene.

we went to hot springs a while back. traded timeshare and got a cabin. we went to that crystal mine (likely) and others in the area. it was fantastic. my son loved it (also obsessed). we did crater of diamonds that same trip (waste of time and a very different experience.... like walking into walmart with no intentions of purchasing).

check out the magic show in hot springs. there were some other things that we did, but pretty easy to find things to do with a young son because all the stuff will sift out once you're there.

Petit Jean State Park is about an hour Northwest of Little Rock. Some of the best hiking trails in the entire state. The Seven Hollows Trail is a great hike to do with kids. We walked 18 miles in Hot Springs National Park. Did the entire loop and saw maybe a dozen people on the trails on a perfect day in midOctober. Drove North and hiked Petit Jean on the way back to Memphis and passed no less than 100 hikers on the trail. It’s that popular for a reason. There’s some great overlooks as well.

There is an ORV park there to test your 4 wheel driving expertise.

Little Rock is like any other largish town, there are parts you don't need to go, but you weren't going to go to those parts anyways.

The city just had some of its worst features become the only publicity it got.

Not saying you should plan a trip just to Little Rock for many reasons, but it definitely has enough good parts to spend some time in.
