Anyone have experience taking the L from ORD into Chicago? Our flight lands at 8 AM, so trying to avoid traffic and surging Uber prices. I've taken it within the city, but wondering if it is reliable/simple from the airport?

I live on the Blue Line and, unless work is paying for it, have never taken an Uber to O'Hare. The train is about as easy as you could ask.

It's really easy. You can walk to it from the airport. I wouldn't get to ORD or MDW any other way. I've also done it arriving at midnight. Chicago keeps it safe.

ETA: And by walk to it I mean you stay indoors to get to it. There's no lugging luggage across streets outside.

Took the blue line from ORD to downtown last time we were there. Was $5 a ticket. Depending on where you are going downtown, you can exit at Clark/Lake station or Washington station. I think it took about 45 minutes which isn't bad considering in an Uber in traffic it can easily take that long and maybe much more.

Awesome, that's what I was hoping to hear.

Thanks everyone.

Yep, ditto what everyone is saying.

Been to CHI twice now, first time didnt trust it + it was 20 degrees out. Took an Uber everywhere..

2nd time, used it for everything and likely will only use it when I go back in august for everything again.

3.00 train ride (single ride) vs a 35.00 - 50.00 uber? I mean you do the math...

They do have some 24 hour passes you can purchase, I want to say they had some sort of "promo deal" and it was 5.00 for 24 hours. That was pretty clutch on the 2nd day we were there and saved us some more money.

use it!

Ya I have a Ventra account for my visits.

Whatever it takes to avoid a long line at a ticket kiosk as you either have people who have a hard time working them or the card reader is being a PITA.

Those issues are public transit issues across the globe

Yeah after one of the baseball games we just rolled on through since we had our ventra card.. that was pretty clutch.

good to know that (we were lucky) ha... but plan accordingly so you can bypass those types of things.

our flight on Sunday when we travel is at 9:00 on a sunday so not sure if I'm trying to take the train back to the airport that time, but will use for everything else. Our hotel is near the Lake/State stop again so makes it super easy to be able to hop on the red line or the loop...

Several times. Never even considered a cab/Uber because the L is so cheap and easy.

For future reference, all CTA takes contactless payment now. I've just been using my Chase Sapphire the last few months.

Also, anyone on this board that lives in Chicago can attest to Lyft/Uber prices right now. They're outrageous. Been an absolute mess since the pandemic.

I’ve used it after midnight coming from the airport. But I was just my brother and me so I didn’t have a wife or kids with me to worry about. But no one gave us any trouble and there were other people using it from the airport too.

ETA: Is that am or pm? Wouldn’t you be getting to the airport around 7 so if it’s pm it’s still daytime. I’ve had a morning flight around 9 am before and took the L there. Their website tells you travel times from certain points. Also you can pull up YouTube videos of real time travel and see how long it takes. They have ride along videos for every line on YouTube.

Ya I think I used the contactless last time back in 2019.

The smoothest public transit move that probably isn't applicable now with mobile wallets and such was my FIL at the US Open in NYC.

We get to Queens and he goes immediately to the kiosk and buys our return tickets. When the tournament let out that line was an hour deep. Smart SOB.

Damn, didn’t know about the YouTube stuff... love that. Will look into it, I guess hopping on around 6:30-7 at night won’t be too rough.

The blue line is excellent from ORD to Downtown.

Never, ever take the L from ORD. Just leave it the way it was intended - LORD

You'll thank me throughout eternity

That's what we always did when we went to games at Wrigley. So good advice for OP if he's going to a Cubs game while in Chicago.

I take pride in not mindlessly standing in lines and using my noggin, so I was a bit embarrassed I hadn't thought of that one. Always room for improvement.

Just want to say thanks to everyone who said how easy taking the L from Ohare was. Complete game changer, and will never use Uber again. Also thanks to the person that suggested the app, amazingly easy and efficient way to go around the city.
