Taking a trip through parts of Germany. Any advice?

My wife and I have flights booked much much later this year into Frankfurt and out of Munich. We both have friends that live in Germany (Cologne and outside of Frankfurt).
We are thinking of road tripping, starting in Cologne, down to the Rhine River Valley, staying a couple of nights in Sankt Goar or Bacharach (or wherever).
Next is where the debate comes in. We are debating either Black Forest like Baden Baden and then on to Bavaria and Munich
Or
Taking the Romantic Road and seeing towns like Rothenberg and Dinkelsbuhl down to Munich, and then using Munich as a home base to see some of Bavaria like Fussen and Mittenwald. We would be driving, with our friends that live there meeting us along the way.
Any thoughts on a plan like this, what you prefer and where to go?

It's been a while since I've been there but Bavaria is amazing.
Don't skip it if you don't have to. Jealous. Have a great time.

Agree with the Rhine Valley, but if you’re going all the way to Munich, maybe consider going to Salzburg?
Romantic Road isn’t the most scenic drive.

I haven’t been to all those places you mentioned, so I can’t compare. But I loved Bavaria and wish to go back. Don’t be afraid of driving to Austria and Switzerland. That’s what we did. Driving through the Alps was fantastic

Been to most of these spots...
On the Rhine, stay in Bacharach and take a river cruise to/from Sankt Goar to visit Rhienfels. If pressed for time, your car will work more quickly I would imagine (we did trains only).
I hadn't done Baden Baden, but it sort of depends if you want to do the spa/casino stuff or if you'd rather the storybook medieval towns. Baden Baden is slightly further by car, whereas Rothenburg is more or less on the way to Munich. If you do that, I'd visit Dinklesbuhl & stay the nightin Rothenburg (the main square is gorgeous without the crowds)
Fussen is gorgeous, if a bit crowded due to tourists like Rothenburg. Good base to tour the Ludwig II castles.
I think it's a fantastic trip....we followed a similar path back in 2014. Let me know if you need hotel/dining recs
ETA: As stated above, Salzburg is also well worth a trip if you have the time

Cologne
when in köln, order only altbier and refuse if anyone offers you a kölsch.
also be sure to tell everyone you meet that düsseldorf is superior to köln in every way, and that they should have never built the cathedral on top of a train station. they love to hear things like that

I live about 2 hours south of Dinkelsbühl, on the Romantik Road. If you are driving from Munich to Füssen, you will pass through my town. If you want to have a beer, let me know (can you send a private message on TD?). Or I could post an e-mail address... When is your trip? While the Black Forest area is beautiful, Baden-Baden looked pretty boring the one time we were there. Hope that helps.

I went to both the Romantic Road and Black Forrest regions a few years ago on a trip through the Alps. After staying one night in Frankfort, we drove down the Romantic Road on the way to Munich. Along the way we spent a very enjoyable day in Rothenburg. It was a cool, grey Easter Sunday, but it was not that crowded at all.
We passed by a few other medieval villages, including Dindelsbuhl, but did not have time to stop. Another village is Nordlingen which is in a valley that is a crater formed when a meteor hit the earth millions of years ago. You can still see where the crater ends and the hills begin.
We had just been to Tuscany the year before where we also drove from town to town, village to village through the rolling hills. We enjoyed the Romantic Road very much, but we compared most of it unfavorably to Tuscany in terms of scenery, and certainly food and wine.
Same with the Black Forrest. At the end of that trip we left Lucerne, Switzerland and drove through the Black Forrest on the way back to Frankfort from where we flew home. We didn't get to Baden Baden ( although we did go to Baden, Austria) but we did spend time in Hiedelberg which was pretty nice.
All of those places are fantastic and you will have a great time. However, my main recommendation is to try to get to the Salzburg/ Vienna area. Salzburg will be a highlight of the trip and the drive from Salzburg to Vienna is the next best thing to a Danube cruise because the road through the scenic Vaccau Valley wine country between Melk and Vienna runs right along the river bank.
Then Vienna ranks up there close to Paris on my list of cities to visit.
Even if you can't get that far, the Romantic Road and/or the Black Forrest will make a fantastic trip. If I had to chose between the two, I would choose the Romantic Road.

Without knowing what you & your wife really like to see and do, all I can tell you is what I would do with your itinerary.
Get over to Bavaria ASAP, with a stop in Ulm.
Stuttgart also if you want to see the Mercedes Benz Museum.
Other than that, Bavaria.
There are obviously wonderful things to do and see other places but if I were on my first trip to Germany, that’s what I’d focus on.
Salzburg is nice too.
Berchtesgaden is close to Salzburg, worth a visit.
Have fun!

Ask them if they say “Americans” when someone posts a topic that’s already been posted/discussed.

Probably out of our price range.

What time frame is this?
It would be worth your time to spend a couple nights in a small village in the Alps.
