Summer vacation ideas for Baltimore - Philly - Boston

Two years ago the wife and I went to St Louis, Detroit, Cleveland, Nashville, Memphis on a lengthy road trip. I’m a sucker for the older stuff, Americana at its finest so-to-speak. We were pleasantly surprised by Detroit and Cleveland.
This year, I’ve convinced her to fly to Baltimore area and hit up Philadelphia and Boston. At the end, we will either drive north toward Montreal or NW toward Niagara Falls (doubtful, as we will probably save that for another trip).
I’m a baseball junkie, so I plan on catching a game at all three cities. We are also allotting an extra day in each city if need be to check stuff out. She’s the foodie, and aside from getting cheesesteak in Philly and seafood in the other two, I’ll let her handle the details.
I like to find the historical stuff, so the Babe Ruth house in Baltimore, maybe an Edgar Allen Poe home, Independence Natl Historic Park, and Freedom Trail are musts. I’m also looking at:
Eastern State Penitentiary
Yuengling Brewery
maybe a coal mine tour
My wife is all about food, markets, coffee, wine, outdoor activities, walking or hiking trails, and any festival that may be going on.
Anybody here have some “must see or do” recommendations for these places?

Many major Civil War battlefields and historic spots in that area. Annapolis is a beautiful little town very close by. Inner harbor has nice restaurants and bars. There is a cool old bar( claimed to be oldest in US) in Fells Point. I think it’s The horse you rode in on or something like that.

Camden Yards is pretty cool in Baltimore. The outfield lounge on Eutaw place is a good spot to hang. I go there just to get a pit beef sandwich from my boy Boog Powell (1971 AL MVP). The Power Plant and the Inner Harbor Seaport are tourist traps. Cross Street Market is a greet place to check out. You can eat and drink there all day. Most legit Maryland seafood is there. Also a fan of Mothers in Federal Hill.

If you are going to Baltimore might as well do DC
Why go from Philly to Boston and skip New York?
Niagra Falls would be a hall from Boston area, would probably stay in the Vermont, New Hampshire area or head north to Montreal Canada
You could do something in upstate New York
You could spend a ton of time in and around Boston area with far less driving and find a lot of things to do

We’ve spent a week in NYC before. We may go back soon anyway.

Same thing as above.
I’m trying to appease the wife a bit.

You’re counting Boston as one of the most dangerous cities in America? Pretty obvious you haven’t a clue what you’re talking about.
OP - happy to help with Boston, won’t be much use on the other two though.
If you like history and beer, stop at the Green Dragon Tavern along the Freedom Trail. It’s across the cobblestone street from Bell in Hand Tavern. While the latter is popular for tourists because it’s the oldest continuously operating bar in the country, it’s seriously just a normal bar. Nothing to see. Green Dragon has a lot of interesting history and guns and beer mugs from the Revolution on the walls.

quote:We toured the Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville, PA about 15 years ago. There is, or was, a small museum there and I think the tour took about an hour. I'm surprised they do tours; it has all the safety features you would expect to find in a factory from the 1800s. At least that's my memory of it. We stopped there because it was more or less on the way to where we going for a wedding. It is pretty far off the route from Philly to Boston.

We have done 5 or 6 road trips to PA and New England over the years and there is a lot to see and I don't feel like we have scratched the surface. But, other than 3 days in Boston this past August we haven't spent much time in the big cities. We did spend 2 nights in Baltimore. Stayed 2 nights near the inner harbor and the most memorable thing we did there was take a boat trip to Fort McHenry - didn't get off the boat there.
quote:I would think Cooperstown, NY is a "must do" for a baseball junkie; if you have not been. It's not far off a route from Boston to Niagara Falls. If you go to NF stop at the Glass Museum in Corning, NY - it's worth it, and visit Watkins Glen State Park about 20 miles north of there.

This past summer we stayed 4 nights in Hyannis (Nantucket, Cape Cod, etc.) and 3 nights in Boston. Great trip and loved Boston. Saw the Yankees play at Fenway. When you do the Freedom Trail be sure and talk to the knowledgeable workers in the various churches/meeting houses. They explain the history and background of the events. We talked to 3 or 4 and they were all great. Eat Italian in the North End (we ate at Giacomo's) and get a piece of Boston Creme Pie from one of the bakeries - we got it from Mike's Pastry on Hanover Street.
A poster mentioned Annapolis. You might want to fly into DC and drive to Annapolis for a tour of the Naval Academy and then drive up to Baltimore. Pay for the guided tour if you go.
There is just so much to see and do in those states that it's hard to make recommendations. If you settle on a more definitive route it would be easier to give specific recommendations that would not be too far out of your way.

Hubby and I just got back from Philly. We loved it. Definitely do Eastern State Penitentary and Mutter Museum. We had the most entertaining park ranger on our tour of Independence Hall. Reading Terminal Market should be on your list, but not on a Sunday as most vendors are closed. Sounds like your wife will love that. We did a BYOB trolley tour of most of the main sites and it was very entertaining as well.
Boston is one of my faves. Just walking the Freedom Trail was enough for me! Italian food in the North End is a must as well. Have fun!
