So my father grew up spending summers in Newport and other areas of New England and hasn't been back in 60+ years. We are thinking maybe 4th week, renting a house. My parents, in their 70s, wife and 2.5 year old. Dad doesn't really like the beach, but everyone else does. He is kind of a cranky guy , but activities and history will keep him busy. So would need a week of them. Any suggestions for where and things to do?

I personally wouldn't do the 4th this late in planning, I have no idea about New England but anywhere half way decent is going to have everything booked up by now or it's going to be extremely sky high rates.

...it's February.

To the OP--Portland, Maine would be my choice, or Portsmouth, NH. Both are beautiful, and while I don't know how much history is in either, there's still plenty to do. I do know that Rye Beach is a short drive from Portsmouth so that could appease the beach-goers.

Throwback Brewery in Hobbs is also close to Rye Beach and they have delicious beer and food in a rustic setting. Highly recommend.

As L said, Portland would probably be my suggestion. I’m actually in Portland right now for the long weekend enjoying the snow.

I would say Newport, RI but there’s really not enough there to occupy someone’s time for a week.

No shite. I'm in the business fwiw. I have July 4th 2019 reserved for some properties. For large vacation rentals involving multiple families there's not a ton of options in prime areas, people that do those vacations yearly reserve them well in advance 9-12 months is very ordinary. July 4th in New England you have a crap ton of people in the northeast looking to get away for the most popular vacation week of the year.

My only point was I'd look for another week outside of July 4th.

Stay in Kennebunkport and you can hit all this on day trips easy.

Yeah L I think you are underestimating how far in advance people book the good spots for the 4th.

I understand what you’re saying here, but OP has his wife and kid + parents. They aren’t looking for a six bedroom place on a lake. They’ll have plenty of opportunity to find a suitable spot to stay in New England.

I just watched The Perfect Storm

Spend some time in Boston and then go to

Gloucester, Massachusetts
Rockport, Massachusetts.

Eh, Gloucester is alright for a day trip. I wouldn’t recommend staying there.

Rockport is a good recommendation though.

That's totally fair. I somehow manage to travel during non-peak times so you're right, I probably don't have a grasp on how quickly things fill up for holidays. Five months out just seemed like a LOT of time. My bad, dudes

Just left dinner in downtown Portland.

Are you a fan of breweries? Good restaurants? Quaint downtown shops along the water?

In the summer you can take whale watching tours. There’s a great science museum and historic lighthouses as well.

This weekend we are staying at a place called Inn By The Sea in Cape Elizabeth, which is about 10 minutes from downtown. It’s on the ocean and a really well run establishment. We have a great view of the beach. I’ll post a picture later.

We would probably be looking at a house since we need three bedrooms total with kid. She/we doesn't do well sleeping in same room.

As for breweries, my dad might for an hour, but that's it. He is either a strohs or bud heavy guy

However he is entertained by everything, processes, even manufacturing etc... He owns a manufacturing company.

Man your dad seems like a tough guy to trip plan for.

Maybe just let him tour every single brewery while you drink a flight?

Honestly, I’d think about doing a Boston trip and mixing in a couple beach days. There’s enough history and manufacturing to keep your dad happy, and plenty of places within an hour to go to the beach.

shite just drop him off at the Gillette factory in Southie and tell him to go nuts.

Yeah, this might be my first legit vacation with him, to somewhere, ever, even including as a kid. We might have done a day trip, but he worked and only took a one week vacation every year, To a house he part owns in Hilton head for 7 days of two rounds of golf a day. Two rotator cuff surgeries and a more autonomous company later he actually travels now. He does love food and wine though, just not into "fancy beers" he actually makes fun of them. I do think he would enjoy a plant tour though.

Inn By the Sea is great. Looks out on the water with access to a nice beach, yet a short drive to Portland. Portland would be a good place to stay and there are plenty of nice drives and day trips. Plenty of hotels in Portland, ranging from the chains to smaller places. Portland Harbor Hotel is pretty good. They also have a sister property out on one of the islands in Casco Bay.
