Will be in Florence for 5 nights in early May. Will be hitting the big stuff and a day in Tuscany. What other side trips would be good. I know Pisa but would like other options. Something where we could just jump in a train and head somewhere.

Considering heading to Modena and seeing the Ferrari museum. Has anyone done that?

When you go to Pisa be sure to visit the nearby town of Lucca. You can rent bikes and ride around the medieval ramparts.

In the Tuscan countryside there are many small hill towns worth visiting. Montalcino and Montepulciano are two of the bigger ones that produce fantastic wines. Volterra and San Gimingiano are near each other and are worth visiting.

And Siena, of course.

Do Siena, not Pisa.

Sienna is amazing.

Modena is beautiful. The Ferrari museum is really cool. Osteria de la Francescana is tied with Eleven Madison Park for the best meal of my life.

Bologna is a grittier college town...great food and bars. Been twice and loved it both times. Very underrated.

Train station in Lucca is right next to the old walled town.
Be sure to get lunch at one of the cafes/restaurants in the old square.
Walk the wall around the town. It is tree lined and absolutely peaceful.
Only a few minutes by train to Pisa if you want to catch both the same day.

''Montalcino moreso as that is where Brunello di Montilcino is made. It is about 1 1/2 hour drive from Florence to Montepulciano so it will be a long day trip but worth it IMO.

I'd even get an Airbnb and overnight in Montepulciano. It's really pretty with the street lights on those old buildings. Although parking does suck there.

OP, if you like wine and go to Montalcino visit La Fortezza which is the enoteca in the old fort. IMO, it's the best enoteca in Italy and only the one in Greve comes close.

In Montepulciano, we parkrd in the big lot across from the church at the bottom of the hill. It worked out fine although we didn't have to deal with luggage.
