Just curious as to the wide range (and i'm sure 100% truthful) responses

I put 200 a month aside for trips and rotate how many I go on. Like this year I did overseas and US plus 1 more smaller coming.
Next year I will just do a smaller on and use the extra money to do a bigger one the following year.

We treat it like an $800 a month bill in our budget, plus anything left over from other line items also goes into the travel account. This may seem excessive for some, but travel is the one thing we spend much more on than the average person. We don't drive luxury vehicles, we cook nearly all our meals, and our mortgage is much less than nearly everyone with a comparable family income.

My wife and I put a minimum of $400 back each month for travel. It can be more depending on what we have coming up.

Yeah I feel the 200-400 amount is ideal.

if i could afford it, 800/month would have me living the high life on vacations

we just have a general savings fund that we put whatever is left in after everything else (bills, retirement, kids college, etc)

this pays for all of our fun stuff, but generally goes towards vacations mostly

sometimes its $800, sometimes its $50

Well, last year I only did Dallas and Houston and stayed with family. My flights ran me about 350 and I spent maybe 1200 between the two. So I rolled over that money this year and was able to go to Europe + California + Dallas + Chicago this year and stay for 7+ days in Europe/California and 3 days in Dallas and Chicago.

However many miles/points/nights I can accumulate.

We do have a separate account for travel funds, but don't really put a whole lot into it - $100-200/mo or so for when needed.

That's the same thing we do typically. My wife had to ruin this year's savings though by getting pregnant again...

Some people are so selfish.

I don't do anything specific on a monthly basis because I have a nice cushion in my accounts and enough impulse control to stick to a budget.

My rule of thumb is a month's pay towards travel each year. The more I make, the more I can travel or the better I can travel.

But I also know that I will never be "rich" and that 10-15% of my net income I spend on vacation is really just taking an advance on comfort and security in retirement. I've made my peace with that. I'm going to see and experience the world while I'm still young enough to enjoy it. And if I wind up eating cat food in a van down by the river when I'm 80 years old, so be it.

It really depends on the month, but we are pretty consistent with it being somewhere between $400-$800.

Never know what could happen in the coming years to make this no longer possible.

That's what I was thinking--I'd rather see new places & different things, not sleep in luxury beds and stay at (often overpriced) resorts with little meaningful contact with anyone who isn't an employee. My preferred travel style doesn't involve hostels & backpacks, but I also don't need all inclusive, 750 thread count sheets, or a butler. My view of the Amalfi Coast from a clean, sweet agriturismo room at $70 including dinner cooked by the farming family's mama was just as beautiful as the view from La Sirenuse's $500 rooms.

Agree--I'm not piling up crazy amounts of cash working 80 hrs a week, I'm living within my means and prioritizing travel in my discretionary spending. Experiences over things....I can go to Europe for two weeks on less than what some ppl spend in LSU or Saints season tickets. Been there, done that: decided I'd rather have new experiences instead of repeating the same old ones.

I probably spend upwards of $30k / year on travel. Maybe more. I try to keep my fixed expenses as low as possible. ~80% of my income is disposable. I still max out 401k and HSA, fully fund emergency fund, and will pay off my house in 5-10 years so I don't feel that my spending on travel is unreasonable.

I’m hourly. My time varies from 44-48 a week.

So obsiiusly my biweekly checks vary some. We picked an amount that we can live on that’s about my 38 hour pay amount. Then everything over that amount goes directly to our big vacation trip fund.

We are taking our boys to Disney in September for a week and already have the cash put aside for it just by doing this method. Now we are already saving for whatever comes next.
