Savannah and Charleston trip report

The Fat Dave family made a trip to Savannah and Charleston. It might not be a trip to excite any gourmand or highfalutin traveler but it was fun. . We hit up Pappasitos for margaritas and TexMex the night before the flight out of hObby. Good food especially the guacamole & beef quesadillas and the filet mignon and shrimp fajitas. The morning of the flight we hit the hotel breakfast and had some decent Texas-shaped waffles. Hobby's PreCheck line was smooth and quick!
We stayed at the Hyatt Regency in Savannah. It's directly on the river and there is a water taxi stop right at the bottom of the hotel elevator that will take you to the convention center.
The Convention Center is short 10-15 minute water taxi ride away but in practice it really sucks. You have to be in line to catch the damn thing and its either freaking hot or raining in the summer. This is the water taxi to and from the Convention Center
Here is the view from the convention center
The views from a River View room at the Hyatt
The Hotel is in a great location but the place is worn down. The place screams 1980's with Hollywood lighting underneath the atrium elevators and 2 ft. balconies with "plants". Check out the "privacy ropes" in the lobby
We hit PS Tavern across the street for shitty beer and Keno because it was happy hour and they had shitty beer and keno.
We walked the area near the hotel and always felt safe. The parks and squares near the hotel were really cool and had many statues, historical markers and stuff for any history geek to have blast exploring.
One day we drove over to Tybee Island. AKA Georgia's Holly Beach complete with chocolate milk beach and water....
After the beach we hit some T-Shirt shops that had an abundance of glass pipes next to large signs for $5 shirts.
We hit up the Crab Shack for a Low Country Boil. Cool atmosphere. Bring seasoning.
The next day we did more walking along the river and in the really cool public squares. We hit up the Savannah Tap-house for beers and burgers.
The Mac n Cheese burger
The Heart Attack burger
The next day we hit the River house and had some Tripel Allagash and apps. The best was the Mahi sliders.
Hey Look There's Paula "Butter -n- Mayonaize" Deen Y'all
People ain't scared to eat a Paula Boofay!!! That's right.......fried yardbird, ribs, meat and gravy along with greens, yams and hoe cakes for the righteous price of $19. Hey... I said "butter, y'all"
I have to admit the shrimp n grits to go was good!! And a lot better than it looks here! And the wine from the local market was cheaper than Paula's
We walked over to Leopold's for some ice cream but there was no way the family was going to stand in line like this for ice cream....at almost 9pm. We might be fat.... but we ain't standing in lines like this for ice cream!
The next morning it was biscuits from the B Mathews Eatery and a bloody mary before setting out for Charleston.

The drive to Charleston took about 2 hours due to traffic. It wasn't a bad drive. Some of the drive was through the marshy area so the scenery was pretty cool.
This must be Lindsey Graham's place
We stayed at the Francis Marion. It's an old place on King Street so you are close to the shopping, restaurants and nightlife.
We walked through the market area. It is similar to the French market in NOLA but there were some areas with AC. I saw no one walking around with beers/drinks. There are tsellers for the usual stuff like t-shirts, sunglasses, leather stuff, kitchen stuff and seasonings. SOme unique and local stuff too.
We ate at the Charleston Crab House. We had BBQ shrimp and grits which was pretty good and made like you would expect but it had a drizzle of BBQ sauce on top of melted cheddar.
The low county boil had larger but fewer shrimp and less seasoning than the Crab Shack. The mahi sandwich was good. Lots of people in the restaurant were eating snow crabs. I would have thought they would have been eating more local stuff.
We went out to Patriot's Point to look around. We didn't do the Yorktown tour because we didn't have enough time to spend there. Next time.
We walkeded the grounds of Ft. Moultrie. I wish we had more time to do the Ft Sumter tour. Next time.
We went to Hom for beers and dinner. It's a bar/restaurant that was really busy. We had a few beers including a really hoppy One Claw. We had crack tots (ranch, buffalo, garlic and sour cream) and fired chicken mac-n-cheese (smoked gouda, fried chicken and bacon). The tots were kind of soggy but the flavor was interesting. The mac-n-cheese was very rich but good. I had the kung Pao chicken sandwich (grilled chicken with saian slaw andsiracha mayo) that was very good but the pic doesn't do it justice.
The next morning we hit Callie's Hot Little biscuit for some LITTLE BISCUITS! I was amazed at how many people were standing in line for these little biscuits! The place is small and packed with at least 15 people in line outside on a Saturday morning. We had a variety of biscuits and washed it down with some Cheerwine. They were good but tiny.
On the way out tot he airport we drove through the Citadel. Its a cool place with clean grounds.
Both cities are easy to walk and we felt safe doing so.
We flew into CHS. It is an easy airport to navigate. No PP lounges but there are enough places to get food and drinks.

The Hyatt is the shame of Savannah. They’d never allow that piece of crap to be built today.

That's disappointing to hear. I stayed there as a kid in the early 90s and remember it being probably the nicest hotel I'd been in at the time.

The take is not based on the inside or quality.
It’s a concrete monstrosity eyesore of the 80s sitting amidst history.
Built before people cared about how the riverfront looked and when any sort of commerce down there was welcome.
Built right in the river blocking views.
Only place worse is the DeSoto Hilton. It looks like a Portman POS (most overrated architect in history). It is a blight to Liberty Street

Bumped to add the Charleston pics.

Savannah is definitely one of the places I would highly recommend airbnb or VRBO over any of the regular hotels. Tons of rooms downtown in those fancy historic homes.
Savannah is also one of the only places I would actually recommend a carriage ride with a horse. You can see so much more of the expansive historic area while relaxing with a cold drink and not walking 10 miles in the brutal heat.
In Savannah it is legal to carry a beer if it is in a cup. Charleston, not legal. That's why you didn't see people at the slave market with beers.
There are also alot more better places to eat in Savannah than the typical tourist spots, although the Crab Shack near Tybee is wonderful for kids. Do they still let kids feed the alligators?

Looking for a one meal recc in Savannah. Anything from casual dive to somewhat upscale (anything but fine dinning as we will be rolling out of a car).

Yeah. It was good for kids.

Crystal Beer Parlor would be my one meal recommendation.
There are better places like The Grey, Local 11 Ten and many more.
But CBP would be my one choice.

We did the Ft Sumter tour the Tuesday after Memorial Day. It was great and well worth it.

Thanks man. CBP was a great recc. 45 mins wait but great beer selection and everyone loved their burgers. The duck wings app were on special and were legit. Exactly what this group of two adults and two teens were looking for. Thanks again.

Really glad to hear. Thank you for checking back in.
I’ve got to know: did anyone try the meatloaf burger?
Oh and sorry for not warning you about a wait!

I recently did a 2 night business trip in Savannah. One dinner at The Grey and the other night at Alligator Soul. They were both great meals and I can't recommend highly enough.

No one got the meatloaf though the server recommended it. I got the lamb. Someone else got the bison. Good stuff.

I visited Savannah last November and stayed at the Hyatt. Paula Dean's restaurant was crap, and the food was very bland. Not a fan of turnip greens and country cooking. Its a glorified overpriced Cracker Barrel. The horse buggy tour was pretty cool.

Yep. The place makes my blood boil.
