Sorry for the delay, just got super busy with work. Overall, we had a great time with our stay at Ramons. It is a beautiful resort with first class service that we received. As I posted before, I expected the beaches to be a tad larger tun they were, but wasn't a deal breaker at all. Just seems on the island that they build so close to the water they don't have much room left. Every thing about Ramons was great. The dive trips were amazing, with great dive masters. If you just want to eat at the resort they have good food, but I would recommend getting out on the town and trying some other places.
Dining, we ate at a few different restaurants in the town away from the resort. Mostly we would just get lunch at the resort and go off for dinner. Elvis was a great place that seemed like one of the higher end places on the island. 2 of us ate for about 60 bucks american dollars for some really good food. We ended up eating here twice. We also ate at Fidos, and Bluewater grill that is located along the beach that is a short walk up the beach from Ramons. We also ate at the Truck Stop which is North of the bridge about 20 minutes from Ramons, this place is shipping containers that serve food out of them. They also have game nights, and poker runs which we did that made us visit a few places that we probably wouldn't have. They are all North of Ramons, heard they had some good places south but never went. We never had a bad meal during our stay.
As for the diving, we made 1 offshore trip which was the blue hole, half moon cage, and the aquarium. The blue hole was cool, but the other 2 were much better being reef dives lasting about 50 minutes each. The reef seen on half moon cage was amazing. I would recommend the blue hole trip if you dive due to half moon cage being the 2nd dive on this trip. We saw huge sea turtles, manata rays, moray eel, lots of other marine life with beautiful coral and reef. Made 2 inshore trips as well that is 5-10minutes from Ramons which are also great dives.
We also did a mainland trip to Belize City doing the zip lining and cave tubing. We all had a blast doing this. The zip lining was very fun and the cave you tube through was a sight to see. Would do this again as well we had such a good time. Worst thing is the travel time which is about 2 hours one way. Hour boat ride then a hour bus ride. But being broken up not bad at all plus our bus driver stopped at a couple places like a Belize sign by the prime ministers house to snap some pictures.
The main way to travel is got carts, which I would just rent when you want to go out and explore. I believe we rented a cart for 2 days. They have a beach called secret beach (which is way on the north side of the island) that will take you about an hour to hour and a half to reach due to the road conditions. Once you get there they have a bar on the right that has some nice chairs which can be a nice little hangout for the day. We enjoyed the riding and just had fun with it, but it is a far ride.
We had a blast on this trip and will probably return once our son gets old enough to dive. Ramons may be a tad more expensive, but way worth it IMO after visiting the island and seeing the other condos. The locals are super nice and helpful if you need it. It is confusing AF to drive around the first day as some streets are one way, but once you travel for a bit you can get the hang of it.

I know I am kinda late to the party, but.......did you know the Madonna song from the 80's "La Isla Bonita" was written about this play.
San Pedro was not a guy....but this island. Learned that a few years ago when I was there.

Great review. I was looking to take a Caribbean trip this summer, and noted that flights to BZE were cheap from MSY. Are there any updated recommendations on where to stay? Late 20's couple, we're used to Cancun all-inclusive resorts which we love but were looking for something slightly different this time around. The Mrs would like similar style accommodations (not necessarily AI), which seems that it could be had for not much $ based on preliminary searching. I have AMEX Platinum so always check where I have status and noted the new Curio resort seems great on paper but I'm not sure if the distance would be an issue. Any recommendations on specific lodging or general would be appreciated.

Distance wouldn’t be an issue if I’m looking at the right place. Mahogany Bay? It’s right on the edge of town.
We stayed at Athens Gate, and it was a super nice place. The staff was pleasant and helpful as far as getting us a water taxi to Caye Caulker and a snorkel trip lined up.
I will say it felt like an eternity to get to town though because the road was not paved out to where we were staying. Rough as hell beyond pavement.
If I’m thinking right, the road was paved right past where they were building that Mahogany Bay place. But that’s been a little over two years ago.

Just got back from a trip to Ambergris Caye and figured I would post a quick review. It was a great time and I will 100% be back.
A couple of things about the island. Everyone speaks English. COVID has hit the place really hard as tourism is the main industry there. Because they are trying to avoid another lock down they are somewhat strict on masks. There was also a 10pm curfew each night but the resort amenities stayed open until 11pm. Everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming. Belize is in the Central time zone but they don't observe daylight savings time. Island time is a real thing, so don't expect extremely prompt service outside of the resort/hotel. Everyone uses gas powered golf carts to get around the island which is really cool. There are few natural beaches on the island and most of the ocean side is covered in sea-grass. Lastly, everywhere only accepts Visa, Mastercard or cash.
Travel to the island is easy. Its a 2:30 flight from IAH to Belize City. You have an option to take a water taxi from Belize City to the islands for $10 a person that takes about an hour and a half, but we opted to do the puddle jumper plane ride. Its $100 a person but its only 15 minutes and the views are pretty amazing. It's almost like an excursion itself.
We stayed at Las Terrazas resort about 3 miles north of San Pedro. Its not the nicest resort in the world, but the pool and beach are nice, the restaurant was above average (really good breakfast, appetizers and fish) and the service was amazing. We didn't book flights through the resort, but they offered transportation to and from for $50/person which was very convenient. We also rented a golf cart through the resort to get into town and around the island.
Day 1 - Travel day. Left Houston at 8:30 and got to the hotel around 3. Got groceries and hung out at the beach. Went and ate at Aji which was a really cool spot. its on the beach and was pretty spaced out.
Day 2 - We went to Secret Beach and hung out at Blue Bayou. Its a really cool place with tables in the water. We went on a Sunday which is when a lot of the locals go. We followed everyone's recommendation and got there early (11:00a) to make sure we got a good table and were able to park. Secret beach is on the west side of the island and has the prettiest water and no sea grass. Food was top-notch. Get the lobster burritos or the fish tacos. They had great prices on drinks ($15 beer buckets and $8 frozen/mixed drinks). Also had tube and paddle board rentals as well as a volleyball net. I would 100% recommend going and making a full day out of it. There is no power infrastructure there so be sure to leave about an hour before sunset. We ate dinner at the Truck Stop which was another really cool spot. They have converted shipping containers into different mini-kitchens with different types of food: pizza, Belizean, Asian and one for ice cream. Also had a great live music from a guy named Dennis Wolfe and were streaming the Olympics. We stopped a few other nights there for a quick drink and to watch some of the events.
Day 3 - Did a half day reef fishing trip with Mike's Fishing. Our guide, Mario was solid. We caught a bunch of yellowtail snapper and two 30# Barracuda. We kept enough to eat and gave the rest to the guides. The restaurant cooked fish for us that was great. We had dinner at Carramba's in San Pedro and it was one of the highlights of the trip. You can order items straight off of the menu or you can select various seafood from the counter and they will cook it for you. Highly recommend getting the hogfish and stone crabs. They also had lobster, octopus, shrimp and a few other types of reef fish.
Day 4 - Did another fishing trip with Go Fish Belize charters. This was a full day trip that was fishing in the morning, lunch of the beach, and snorkel in the afternoon. By far one of the coolest things we did and highly recommend. Caught a variety of snapper and a few barracuda in the morning then they took us to one of the beaches where we cooked the fish and some lobster they had caught the day before. They did it all over an open flame and it was one of the best meals we had. We then went and snorkeled the Mexican Rocks which was awesome. Lots of reef fish, coral, stingrays and even some sharks. Belize has the second largest barrier reef in the world but its the most lively. Ate dinner at Rain which was very upscale with the best view on the island. The food was average and probably not worth what we ended up paying.
Day 5- We booked an inland trip to see the Mayan ruins and to zip line and cave tube. We left he resort at 6:15 and got back at 5:30 so its an all day thing. The resort scheduled this for us and we used Marcos Private Mayan Tours. I cannot recommend these guys enough. If you go, ask for Ivar to be your guide. He was legitimately one of the most knowledgeable people I have ever met. Its about a 1:30 drive to Xunantunich and the ruins. I enjoyed this more than I thought. Lots of cool history. We then went to Jaguar Paw Park to zipline the rainforest and cave tube. Ziplining was meh at best but the cave tubing was really cool. The whole day was worth the travel. Ate dinner at Pur and it was pretty good. The portions are absolutely ridiculous so be sure you share. My burrito could have fed 3 people and the quesadilla was big enough for two.
Day 6 - Travel home. As a pro-tip there are two entries into the terminal at BZE. If you take the plane from they caye it will put you at the main tourist terminal which had crazy long lines to get through security and customs. If you walk out of that terminal (Terminal 2) you can walk down to terminal 1 and the line is much shorter and moves faster. There is limited food options in the airport so plan accordingly.
This has been my second favorite spot only behind Turks and Caicos, but this was about half of the price. If anyone has any questions shoot me an email drunkencrawfishtd@gmail.com

Is Jet's Bar still open?
I heard Jet passed. Git ya some special rum punch for the LADYYYY!

Is that the bar on the far side of the airport by gate 1? If so, yes. There is also a place to buy Belikin draft beer at the opposite end of the airport. It’s pretty ok, but after a day of traveling it was a top-notch option.

Jet sadly did pass... here are some pics we took in 2014.

I’ve been to ambergris Caye many times. That was the old bar before it burned. They rebuilt it and when we went back to the new one we brought Jet a LSU sticker. He put it on his refrigerator. I can here his squeaky little voice now

first time I went to Belize was back in the mid 70s.
we stayed at a place called the aqua lodge just south of San Pedro which was just some grass huts right on the beach with a central bar/restaurant building. It’s long gone now
second trip was mid 90s we stayed at the Victoria house which I think is still there. One of my favorite places on earth though I’m sure the whole area has changed quite a bit since then

Anyone have AT&T service and can say if they got signal around ambergris caye? How about cellular data? Do the hotels and business typically have WiFi?
Been wanting to go here but worried about not having connectivity back home for work.

Can't say for AT&T but we have Verizon and added international for our trip with no worries. I was sending emails all the way through our ride to Xunantunich (about an hour and a half) and never had any issues.
As far as Wifi, every restaurant that we went into had it. I think that is how travelers typically stay connected if they don't have international data. I don't think it would be an issue. The resort had wifi the whole time.
